The most beautiful islands of Cambodia

Perhaps not everyone knows that more than 50 tropical islands enrich the coasts of Cambodia. A country famous for its fascinating temples and ancient ruins. But which is increasingly establishing itself as a seaside destination in Southeast Asia.

These are not endless and extended beaches as far as the eye can see. But rather paradisiacal, unspoiled corners, mostly unknow to mass tourism.

Until recently we hardly heard of it. Overlooking Cambodia, the Thai atolls have thought about it for years. Literally target by tourists from all over the world thanks to the presence of services and comfortable facilities.

Today the situation has clearly change. The Cambodian people have finally realize the value of their natural beauties. By investing right on the coasts, making them easier to access and usable.

The main maritime destination is Sihanoukville which. From being a popular destination for backpackers. Has recently been transformed thanks to the interest and capital of foreign investors. Who have open luxurious resorts and restaurants there, also favoring road access.

But in Cambodia there is something for everyone! For lovers of total peace and relaxation, there are still practically desert islands. Where the only human settlements are represent by small fishing villages.

An authentic and simple world, diametrically opposed to the often inflated resorts of neighboring Thailand. For a vacation in close contact with nature in the name of the tropics.

For those who are planning an escape to Cambodia, as a relaxing holiday or a seaside extension following a tour in the hinterland.

Here are the best beaches not to be missed:

Finally, the islands of Cambodia are also beginning to receive the tourist attention they deserve! Welcome to a tropical paradise as fragile as it is suggestive. Where dream landscapes, pristine beaches and incredible opportunities for relaxation and fun await you. Unlike the more famous Thai islands, those of Cambodia are still relatively little frequent. And offer the tourist thirsty for new horizons a chance to get to where hardly anyone has ever been before.

we have prepared for you a list of the 10 most beautiful and evocative islands in Cambodia. So that you can enjoy a relaxed Costa cruise and land at your destination with a number of interesting options for your natural itineraries. And don’t forget to take a look at the list of our fantastic excursions!

The southern coast of Cambodia is still a widely and erroneously underrated location. The closure of the country due to the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s. Which led to some of the worst human rights violations in recent human history. As witnessed by the S-21 prison in Phnom Penh, has left important aftermath on everyone. The sectors of civil and economic society of the country. The tourism sector was obviously one of the hardest hit.

Until about twenty years ago, Cambodia was a very niche destination and off the beaten track. Angkor Wat alone (magnificent!) Seemed capable of attracting international tourists to the country. While almost exclusively humanitarian workers and businessmen ventured to Phnom Penh. The rest of the country was almost completely excluded from tourism and the social and economic development that it entails.

So what to do besides Angkor Wat and the capital Phnom Penh in Cambodia? Sea! Where to go though?

Better Vietnam or Cambodia to do a few days at sea? Cambodia or Thailand to see some heavenly beaches? Better Cambodia or Vietnam for the deserted islands a few kilometers from the coast?

For years, responses have been against the Khmer country for the greater development of its Southeast Asian neighbors. Not that this necessarily meant more beauty and you will notice it during your Cambodian vacation.

The beauty of the coasts of Southeast Asia is given by the large number of islands: Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam, all have a myriad of them, from the most touristy full of resorts to the isolated and almost uninhabited ones.

This guide wants to help you better organize your next holidays: Cambodia do-it-yourself or with an organized tour. It will be an unforgettable journey where. In addition to seeing the beautiful Cambodian sea. You will also encounter the complex and interesting Khmer culture.

In general, the whole year is good for a trip to the country. The best months to go to the beach in Cambodia are December and January. When temperatures become milder and rainfall is scarce. It is obviously also the most touristic period.

Then, until the end of April, it starts to get hotter and hotter, reaching 35 ° C-40 ° C on the most suffocating days. In this period, if you are not used to it, it will not be easy to bear the climate. Cambodia to avoid at Easter? Not necessarily, especially since the heat will be more bearable on the beach. But think carefully if you intend to combine the sea with an inland itinerary. When it’s hot it can be very tiring to visit Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh and the rest of Cambodia.

Trip to do throughout the rest of the year?Yup!

In fact, although the monsoon season begins towards the end of May and lasts until September-October. The rains are normally violent but short afternoon showers. With suitable clothes you can go to Cambodia in any season.

August is often a month of high tourist traffic due to the European holiday period. You may find a little more visitors, but in general the coast is never overcrowded, apart from Sihanoukville. Cambodia in August is therefore a great choice for your next vacation!

So, in summary, if you are planning your next trip to Cambodia by the sea, when to go? Exclude the months of March and April for high temperatures. November, December and January are the best months. But if you have little flexibility in your dates, don’t worry. You can easily go to Cambodia in August and during the other summer months like June and July.

The good news of the recent development of tourism in the south of the country is that it can be reached via many flights. Cambodia and neighboring countries are in fact connected by the most common low-cost and Asian flag airlines, such as AirAsia.

All flights to southern Cambodia arrive at Sihanoukville International Airport. But flying to Phnom Penh is also fine. As from the capital, with five or six hours of travel. You can reach all destinations on the coast.

Cambodia’s coast is sandwiched between two other Southeast Asian countries. In the northwest, you can cross the Thai border a few kilometers from the city of Koh Kong. To the southeast, near Kep, you can instead go from Cambodia to Vietnam by land and vice versa.

You can reach Sihanoukville from Angkor Wat and Phnom Penh by plane. From the capital, many shared buses or taxis leave at any time of day to the south of the country.

The Cambodia tourist visa is valid for three months from the date of issue and 30 days from the date of entry into Cambodia. Tourist and business visas can be do on arrival or in advance on the government website.

The cost is $ 30, but doing it online will charge you an additional $ 6 in administrative costs.

Pay attention to land border posts:

The Cambodian visa could cost you a couple of dollars more. “Because I have so many to do and yours can go to the top of the list”. The culture of bonjour, of our “bribe”, is not yet outdated in Cambodia. Not that it is in Italy or in many other countries anyway!

The Cambodian currency is the Riel, which has a fixed exchange rate with the US dollar:

Both coins can be used freely, so just bring a nice stash of dollars. They will give you the change in Riel, which you will then have to finish before leaving. Because the amount of local currency that can be export is very limit. But they certainly won’t tell you anything if you forget some Cambodian bills in your wallet!

Linked to the currency. There is one of the factors that will make you decide to take a trip to Cambodia: very low prices. The Khmer country is one of the cheapest in all of Southeast Asia, already a cheap region in itself.

You can find accommodations in the most isolated places for even five or ten dollars. A not too long motorcycle taxi ride will often not exceed a dollar. As long as you are good at bargaining. But without exaggerating out of respect for the worker

The only mandatory vaccine for Cambodia is that for yellow fever. But only for those coming from countries at risk or having stopped over for more than 12 hours. My advice, as always, is to do it anyway. Because it is valid for life and is needed in many other countries around the world.

There are many doubts about the security situation in Cambodia: dangerous or safe? The answer, as in many other countries, is that it depends. It depends on where you go and who you go with. For example, even if it seems obvious, never venture out with a stranger outside the most touristy areas.

In general, along the coast, Cambodia is safe. Only in Sihanoukville may there be petty crime problems, but the police are even more present than in other locations. So, in general, enjoy your holiday in peace by taking only the minimum of necessary precautions in every place. Be it in Italy or in Southeast Asia.

After the introductory part with the useful tips for visiting coastal Cambodia. It’s time to go into detail on. What you can find in this little corner of Asia. Beautiful sea, islands and beaches are the norm in this part of Cambodia.

What to see absolutely, though?

You won’t always have time to visit the entire coast. And you’ll often have to make choices. Especially if you combine this area with other Cambodian attractions. Beautiful beaches are everywhere, dream islands as well. So don’t despair because you will fall well in any case.

The following guide is intended to help you plan your Cambodia vacation. Do-it-yourself trip or organized tour, as already mentioned, are both excellent ways to get around the Khmer country: the former gives you more freedom and perhaps satisfaction, an organized trip more peace of mind. The choice is yours!

If you decide to organize the tour on your own, I would say that ten days or two weeks are the right way to make a beautiful itinerary among the beaches of Cambodia.

The following locations are the most beautiful by the sea in Cambodia, in strict geographical order, starting from the border with Thailand in the northwest and down to the one with Vietnam in the southeast. For each city or island you will find a description, useful information on how to get there, where to stay and excursions to make your tour of the country unforgettable.

So get ready to find out below where to go to the beach in Cambodia.

Once a smuggling area, the west coast of the country is slowly becoming an attractive eco-tourism destination, the main center of which is the town of Koh Kong. Cambodia and Thailand meet here, a few kilometers from the regional capital.

The city can be reached by bus from Phnom Penh in five hours, one less if you leave Sihanoukville. The cost of the ticket varies between five and ten US dollars.

From the city you can rent a moped and go to visit the waterfalls in the area, the most famous of which are the Tatai Waterfall. Otherwise with a guide you can arrange a boat trip through the mangroves followed by a jungle trek that leads to other beautiful waterfalls.

The area around the capital is one of the most beautiful areas in Cambodia. In particular, the Koh Kong Conservation Corridor is one of the least visited but the most beautiful national parks in the country.

A little to the north are the Cardamom Mountains, another natural and fauna paradise, where you can meet elephants, tigers, crocodiles and other rare species.

Further south is the BotumSakor National Park, a promontory surrounded by mangroves that  it also hosts numerous protected animal species.

To organize excursions around Koh Kong, you can find tips and tour operators on Tripadvisor.

I advise you not to stay in Koh Kong, but to move away a few kilometers, in the locality of Tatai, to find two of the most beautiful lodges in southwestern Cambodia: the KohAndet Eco Resort and the 4 Rivers Floating Lodge. Excellently positioned on the river and surrounded by nature, they are ideal for organizing excursions in the natural park. You will not regret it, you cannot go to Cambodia without having stayed for a few nights in a lodge on the river.

For a spartan but clean city center hotel, stop at 99 Guesthouse which is close to everything you may need. Useful if you want to explore the town and the island of KohKong which stands nearby.

The island of Koh Kong is the largest, but at the same time the least touristy of Cambodia. More beautiful and at the same time deserted beaches of these will be difficult to find in the country.

The island is easily reached during the dry season from the city of Koh Kong: you can find tour operators in the center that organize boats.

The only hotel on the island is the Koh Kong Island Resort, with beautiful rooms bungalows overlooking the beach. An ideal place to stop for a few nights and rest.

To get an idea of what could happen to the island of Koh Kong, but also to many others along the Cambodian coast, watch this video. And fall in love with the island!

At the end of the only road that crosses the BotumSakor National Park is the village of Kiri Sakor, the access point for the island of KohSdach, the largest of the twelve that make up this very isolated Cambodian archipelago.

KohSdach is without a doubt the stretch of sea in Cambodia to go to if you love diving. The Octopus Garden Diving Center organizes diving excursions into the archipelago’s coral reefs, including the famous Shark Island.

Another activity to do in KohSdach is to rent a boat and be guided to discover the most beautiful deserted beaches of BotumSakor National Park, a corner of paradise still untouched by human activity.

There isn’t much choice on KohSdach. The aforementioned Octopus Garden Diving Center and Belinda Beach are currently the only two options, demonstrating how isolated these islands of Cambodia are.

The most important coastal city in Cambodia takes its name from the old king Sihanouk, during whose reign it was founded in the 1950s to build the great port, a fundamental point of entry for goods into the country.

It is approximately four hours by shared bus or taxi from Phnom Penh. The connection between Sihanoukville and Siem Reap is instead provided by the comfortable Giant Ibis night buses.

It has developed a lot in recent years, mainly thanks to the airport and Chinese investments in the city. Unfortunately, “development” does not always rhymes with “beauty”: large hotels, casinos, crime, drugs and prostitution are all characteristic features of the city that clash with the fabulous beaches and islands found in the sea around the city. At the same time, if you are looking for a place to party along the Cambodian coast, you are in the right place.

On this day tour you can discover Sihanoukville, including PhsarLeu market and Leu temple, but also Kbal Chhay waterfalls.

If you are passionate about motorcycling, I recommend that you visit the city and its surroundings through a guided tour with motocross bikes (equipment and entry to the national park are included): without a doubt the best excursion you can do in Sihanoukville.

Nightlife and, of course, the sea. South of the city extends a long strip of sand that forms the most famous beaches of Sihanoukville and some of the busiest in Cambodia.

The first is calledOchheuteal Beach and starts immediately after the marina. The port area is called Serendipity Beach and there are numerous bars and restaurants where many young and foreign adults gather.

After the promontory there is Otres Beach, which is divided into Otres I and Otres II, my favorites. The further you get from the center of Sihanoukville, the less crowded the beaches are.

The beaches north of the marina, on the other hand, are less beautiful, although Sokha Beach is quite famous and popular and deserves a few hours of relaxation in the shade of the resorts.

All the beaches of Sihanoukville, especially those in the northern part of the city, have been undergoing profound transformation for years due to the very little restrictive urban plans and the construction boom that follows. Russian and Chinese investors compete to finance Cambodian businessmen to build bigger and bigger hotels.

Off Sihanoukville there are many islands, the most ago famous of which are Korong and Korong Salome. Both deserve at least a couple of days each, but you don’t always have enough time. If you want to explore all the islands around the main city in southern Cambodia. You can decide to take a private motorized pirogue boat tour that also includes lunch.

South of Sihanoukville is Ream National Park, made up of primary forest that is home to many bird species. Some of which are in danger of extinction. You can find tour operators who organize guided boat and canoe tours of the national park.

Personally I would only stay downtown if you are passing through to take the ferry to one of the islands the next day. Otherwise I would move to the beaches. It must be said, however, that the city center can also be the ideal place to have a little party and meet other people.

If you decide to sleep in the center of Sihanoukville. I recommend the Small Hotel, spartan but clean and in a good location.

A fabulous place to stay for a little luxury experience in Cambodia is the Ren Resort, right at the end of Otres Beach. I found you the most beautiful rooms among Cambodia’s seaside resorts. Despite the excellent quality, the prices are affordable.

Not far away are the inexpensive Lakshmi Bungalows, with decent rooms, but no access to the beach.

Here we are at the most famous island off Sihanoukville: KohRong. Maybe even the whole of Cambodia. It is a piece of land with still semi-desert beaches, where many animals also live.

Korong is the best choice if you are looking for beautiful sea in Cambodia. Unfortunately, it is also the island that is developing the fastest. So you’d better visit it quickly, it is ruin by wild construction.

It can be reach by boat from the Sihanoukville marina. Unfortunately the times are always very indicative and the overcrowding of the boats is nothing new. Be prepare and I advise you not to get angry, you would not gain anything in any case. You can book a speedboat or a Happy Boat directly online. The first takes about 45 minutes to get to KohRong. While the second stops to snorkel on another island and arrives after about two and a half hours. And then returns in case you just want to take a one-hour boat trip. day.

The area where the boats arriving from Sihanoukville dock is also the best for partying. Although the name is not exactly the most appealing from this point of view: Police Beach.

On the opposite side, Sok San beach is make up of five uninterrupted kilometers of white sand, set between the crystal clear sea and the forest. A true paradise!

On KohRong you can do the Blob Jump. Which is the jump from a platform of about six meters onto a huge air chamber. You can see more in 2m30s of this video on KohRong. Which will also help you get an idea of the beauty of the island.

Another attraction of the island is the zipline on Highpoint, one of the highest points on the island.

It goes without saying that snorkeling and diving are among the most popular activities to do on KohRong due to the beauty of the Cambodian sea off the island.

Finally, if for some strange reason you need a break from the white beaches and the crystal clear sea. You can go for walks and mountain bike excursions in the interior of the island.

The busiest area of the island is the southern one, where boats arriving from Sihanoukville dock. Here you can choose to stay at the Paradise Bungalows which are located directly on the beach, or at the Reef on the Beach. Which has family rooms, beautiful double rooms with sea views. But also single beds in dormitories that suit any budget.

The almost homonymous KohRongSamloem is perhaps one of the quietest islands in Cambodia. Far from the party atmosphere of nearby KohRong, mass tourism is still far away here, albeit dangerously ever closer.

Everything, or almost everything, develops around the beautiful and long white beach of the BaiadeiSaraceni where the speedboats arriving from Sihanoukville dock.

For even more peace, cross the narrow island to the west coast, where there are two secluded beaches. The first is Lazy Beach where there is a bar / restaurant. A little further north is Sunset Beach. From here, needless to say, you can see one of the most beautiful sunsets over the sea in Cambodia (although my favorite is on Rabbit Island).

On KohRongSamloem you can go on excursions inside the island, but also boat trips to discover the seabed while snorkeling.

Finally, a unique experience that I recommend everyone to do: the night swim with plankton lumines

at least beautiful and exciting!

The best place in the BaiadeiSaraceni is The One Resort, also a great place for an aperitif on the beach.

Are you on vacation to have fun and meet other travelers like you? In this case you have to go to Mad Monkey, yet another masterpiece hostel of the most famous chain in Southeast Asia.

If you are looking for more complete seclusion, then choose Robinson Bungalows on the other side of KohRongSamloem, in Sunset Beach.

A short distance south of Otres Beach is Koh Ta Kiev, another of Cambodia’s islands that will soon be ruined by massive constructions. We hope that they will at least preserve the beautiful white beaches of the island.

Easily accessible from both Sihanoukville and Ream National Park, it is an excellent destination for a day trip from the district capital. You can also stay in some bungalows at the Kactus.

A few hundred meters from Koh Ta Kiev there is another small corner of paradise, KohRussei, also called Bamboo Island. Cambodia and the Asian superpowers (China and Russia) have long had agreements for the uncontrolled exploitation of the Khmer coast: KohRussei has met the same fate and all the bungalows that were there until a few years ago have been eliminated.

Now you can only stay at the luxurious (and beautiful) Villas KohRussey. To give Caesar what is Caesar’s, it must be admitted that they have managed to build something that integrates decently with the landscape, much better than one might have expected.

Another island that is likely to be increasingly exploited from a tourist point of view is remote KohThmei, near the southern tip of Ream National Park. There is also talk of projects to build a bridge that connects it to the mainland.

At the moment you can only stay at KohThmei Resort, perfect for an isolated stay away from the stressful pace of our society.

This is not a seaside resort, but it still remains one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Cambodian coast. Located near the mouth of a river, there are also beautiful hiking areas around Kampot.

The ease of reaching the region has also helped its tourism development. Kampot is in fact only four hours by road from Phnom Penh. You can pre-book a shared taxi from the capital.

Kampot is world famous for its pepper and plantations of the precious spice. One of the most famous farms, La Plantation, offers various experiences. The first one I recommend is a Khmer cooking lesson where, of course, pepper will be the protagonist.

The other excursion is a mixture of all those offered by La Plantation: you will start with a tour of the farm to discover how pepper is grown; then you will take a ride on a cart pulled by water buffaloes that venture smoothly into their natural habitat, the river; finally lunch in one of the best restaurants in the area. You can find more details about this activity here.

Not far from Kampot is the Bokor National Park, which corresponds to the southern tip of the Cardamom Mountains. Inside you can visit the Bokor Hill Station, a health resort built by the French in the 1920s and today almost completely abandoned, but with redevelopment projects. Most of the buildings are covered with plants which give a spooky look.

The renovated Bokor Palace is one of the best examples of colonial architecture in all of Cambodia. It houses one of the best hotels on the south coast of Cambodia.

The area is experiencing a revival from a tourist point of view with a huge project worth hundreds of millions of dollars that will probably end up ruining the beauty of the area.

If you want to learn more about the life of Cambodians in the countryside, I recommend that you take a tuk-tuk tour along the narrow streets outside the city in the area between Kampot and Kep. The local guide will be able to give you all the information you want and satisfy all your curiosities.

A few tens of kilometers from Kampot is Kampong Trach, a district with natural beauties to visit: caves, mountains, lakes. From Kampot you can choose a day tour that will take you to discover this area off the beaten track of mass tourism.

If you’re in Kampot on the weekend, the Greenhouse is the best place to sleep, with no ifs and buts. Nice bungalows by the river where you can swim freely, beautiful sunset behind the hills, great food. I don’t think you need anything else.

Since the Greenhouse is not open during the week, a good alternative is the SabayBeach which is located directly opposite, on the other side of the river.

Since the 1920s, a tourist destination for the rich French first and then Cambodians, the town of Kep was practically abandoned duringthe Khmer Rouge regime, for whom tourism was certainly not an important activity.

It has only recently seen some development and a return to being a tourist resort. The small beach in the center and the famous fish market where you can enjoy excellent crabs are the main attractions of the city.

It is one of my favorite destinations and I have already written about the small National Park that occupies the hill overlooking the city of Kep.

Cambodia and Vietnam meet a few kilometers south of the city, so it is a must for those who are crossing the country and then enter the Vietnamese neighbors.

The best hotel in Kep is the Veranda Natural Resort, just below the National Park. Stunning rooms and a spectacular swimming pool, a stone’s throw from the forest and overlooking the sea.

Half an hour by boat from Kep is one of the places I have left the most in the heart of Cambodia: KohTonsay, known by all as Rabbit Island, apparently because its shape resembles a rabbit. Good luck imagining the animal on google maps.

Everything is on the beach where the boats dock: a couple of restaurants, bungalows and a few massage gazebos. I strongly recommend that you come here with some good books (here are some tips) and enjoy a fabulous sea, among the most beautiful in southern Cambodia.

If you want to explore the island a bit, head west to the beach and always follow the coast. Crossing a flat promontory full of coconut palms bent by the wind, you will arrive on another beach, from which I saw the most beautiful sunsets in all of Cambodia.

Continuing, you will come out on the beach at the back of the island, with the huts where the few families who live on the island live.

Then spend the rest of the day at the landing place until the sun goes down. In the dark, take a bath in the dark waters that will suddenly light up: KohTonsay is in fact one of the best places to see bioluminescent plankton in Cambodia.

I recommend that you reach this paradise, like the rest of Cambodia’s most beautiful islands, before mass tourism ruins them excessively!

Laos: what to see for a trip to the pearl of Asia

Laos is a perfect country to savour all the immeasurable charm of intact natural landscapes. That live in perfect symbiosis with cities. That still jealously preserve their cultural and traditional riches. Therefore, to find out what to see during a trip to this real pearl of Southeast Asia. We must really overcome the embarrassment of choice. Because there are so many essential destinations.

From the breathtaking mountains to the cities. Laos has always remained practically alien to any attempt at modernization from neighboring countries, perfectly assisting all its different ethnic groups and preserving its Buddhist culture with enormous spiritual dedication through museums, temples and natural corners of beauty. boundless.

Thanks to this purity out of the hectic flow of time. Laos has attracted more and more visitors from all over the world especially in recent years. To the point of representing a tourist destination particularly beaten by anyone wishing to spend a well-deserved holiday in the name of an absolute relaxation made of peace. Tranquility and immersion in the most remote and uncontaminated nature.

So let’s pack our travel insurance and leave for this wonderful experience.

Muang Sing

Muang Sing is literally the last city before the Chinese border. It is absolutely not a must-see but renting a scooter and travelling the 60 km. That divides the city from Luong Namath is an extremely pleasant way to spend the day.

The road with little traffic is in good condition. And runs through rural villages and the jungle, it is truly scenic. Driving calmly is about two hours. You can have lunch in Muang Sing and then return to the city in the afternoon. I also recommend stopping at the Panging waterfall. It can reach at the end of a short path. Not exactly impressive but certainly nice and a nice way to stretch your legs. Admission technically costs 10,000 KIP but during my visit. There was no one there. check and I got in for free.

I rented a semiautomatic scooter at this shop for 50,000 KIP. The automatic scooter costs 70,000 KIP, a passport is require as a deposit.

How to reach LuangNamtha?

The bus station is located about 10 km south of the city. The fixed price of the tuktuks is 20,000 KIP. From here there are direct connections to LuangPrabang approximately 8 hours. Nong Khiaw approximately 6 hours and HuayXai approximately 4 hours. There are also several departures to the border with China and air connections to and from the capital Vientiane.

Where to sleep in LuangNamtha?

If you are looking for the cheapest option ever. Many Chan Guesthouse seems the only option with a dormitory, 30,000 KIP per night. I slept at Adounsiri Guesthouse, away from the main road, a spacious and clean room for 70,000 KIP. Even if at first I wanted 80,000. I also took a look at Thoulasith Guesthouse, an excellent solution in the center. If, on the other hand. You are looking for an economical solution but in a really nice setting outside the center on the banks of the river. Take a look at Tandem Guesthouse.

Nong Khiaw

Nong Khiaw is not part of the classic Laos itinerary but being only three hours from LuangPrabang. It is becoming particularly popular. It is a small town on the banks of the Nam Ou River. Surrounded by limestone mountains with a landscape similar to VangVieng. But with a much more rural and relaxed atmosphere.

What to do and see in Nong Khiaw

It is a very quiet place where you could spend a couple of days relaxing, renting a bungalow by the river. But there are also many excursions and activities to do in the city and its surroundings.

Climb the viewpoints overlooking the city

There are at least three really cool viewpoints around the city. Pahang Peak can be reach in about 40 – 60 minutes depending on the pace. Excellent view at both sunrise and sunset, if you want you can camp on the top. The path is easy to follow and well maintained. The entrance costs 20,000 KIP.

The second viewpoint I went up to is Nang None Mountain. Where there are actually two distinct viewpoints: the first is slightly lower while the second is higher and in my opinion, offers a better view, the entrance costs 15,000 KIP.

Of the two just mentioned, Phadeng is the most beautiful. Finally, there is a third and last viewpoint. Which I have not visited but judging by the photos it doesn’t look bad at all. It was recently open. So it is not as popular as the other two but it looks absolutely the highest. So I guess it takes well over an hour to climb. The start of the trail should be this, entry costs 20,000 KIP.

In all cases, it is advisable to bring a headlamp, especially if you decide to go up for the sunset.

PhaKuang Cave

The cave is locate slightly outside the city but can easily be reach on foot. The reviews are somewhat mix but I assure you that if you like exploration it is absolutely worth it. Admission costs 10,000 KIP and, if you don’t have it, a headlamp is provided.

It is a cave use during the war as a bomb shelter and the tunnels are at times extremely narrow. You have to literally crawl on the ground to make your way between the various rooms. Extremely fun and adventurous as far as I’m concerned. But if you’re not ready to get dirty and do of contortionist maneuvers. I would probably avoid.

Another cave near the city is PhaTok Cave. I haven’t been there personally but according to the review. It doesn’t seem like anything special.

Finally, among the various activities offered in Nong Khiaw. There are kayaking along the river, visiting ethnic villages that you could do on your own by renting a scooter, zip-lining and finally quite popular trekking offered by Tiger Trails called “100 Waterfalls” you can read about on TripAdvisor.

Where to sleep in Nong Khiaw?

I slept in Nong Khiaw Riverview where, after bargaining. Also I managed to get a private back room for KIP 50,000 a night. And I was told Delilah’s has a good dorm for 35,000 KIP. During the high season, prices are probably higher. In any case, there are several guesthouses and finding a good option shouldn’t be a problem. Also because the city is really compact.

How to reach Nong Khiaw?

From LuangPrabang it’s about 3 hours, 40,000 KIP, from LuangNamtha it’s about six hours, 100,000 KIP. Technically there are also night buses to Vientiane and Phonsavan. I walked from Nong Khiaw station to the centre but, if you want, a tuk-tuk costs only 5,000 KIP.

Muang Ngoy

This tiny village nestle in the mountains is locate on the banks of the river north of Khiaw and can only be reached by boat. Until 2013 it did not even have electricity all day. Today it has become in a sense a popular destination. But still remains a quiet place where you can unplug.

What to do in Muang Ngoy

You could easily spend your days lounging in a hammock overlooking the river. But, if you want to stay active, here are some suggestions. In any case, if like me you love buffet breakfasts. Don’t miss the one offered by the Riverside Guesthouse Restaurant, 35,000 KIP and endless food!

Phanom viewpoint

This viewpoint is located here, a stone’s throw from the village. And offers excellent views of the village below and the river. The trail starts at this point. The entrance costs 10,000 KIP, it takes between 20 and 40 minutes to climb, according to your pace.

If you want there is another viewpoint, slightly lower. Whose access is located at this point, the view is similar to that of the other viewpoint but the path is shorter and there are also two caves that you can explore, here too the entrance costs 10,000 KIP.

Pha Boom Viewpoint

This viewpoint is located on the opposite side of the village. I didn’t go up there as in mid-March the weather is not ideal. But judging by the photos taken at other times of the year I think it is absolutely worth it. The path begins at this point and from what is written the entrance. Which costs 20,000 KIP to pay at the Gecko Restaurant.

According to the reviews, the path is quite tough especially in the last stretch, 4-5 hours there and back.

Houay Bo, Houay Sen and Ban Na

Houay Bo, Houay Sen and Ban Na are three villages that can be reached on foot from Muang Ngoy. It’s a nice way to spend the day walking through the rice fields and observing the rural life. All three villages have guesthouses to spend the night. I have visited Ban Na and Houay Bo. Nothing exceptional especially in the late dry season when the rice fields are completely dry. But if you like to take a walk and stop for lunch or just a tea while observing the authentic village life. It’s definitely a nice way to spend the day.

Northern Laos

If you choose to visit Laos, travelling through a large part of its territory to better enjoy all the splendid variety that characterizes. The surrounding nature and the local cultural and traditional substance. It may be useful, first of all, to draw up a draft itinerary that allows us to better group the most fascinating stages proceeding from north to south or vice versa.

As for the northern area of  Laos, to know what to see among the thousand beauties offered by this wonder of creation we can consider that. It is the portion of the territory that includes the two most fascinating cities, Vientiane and Luang Prabang. But also other locations ( especially mountainous) much less known but no less attractive.

North of LuangPrabang, for example, is NongKiaw, a small town on the banks of the Nam Ou River, perfect for trekking and climbing enthusiasts. Right here, in fact, the limestone walls that delimit the area are an ideal point of arrival for paths through splendid natural paths that lead to real panoramic terraces that literally break your breath at the sight of the majestic landscape below.

But also the border with China reserves enchanting places to see absolutely to make a trip to Laos even more complete. LuangNamtha, above all, is a perfect landing point. Because it is the main destination for walking to the nearby Nam Ha National Protected Area. Once you arrive here it will be impossible not to be literally speechless in the presence of ancient rural villages. Where it is possible to stay overnight being gladly hosted at home by some local families.

But the surrounding rice fields are also splendid. Which can also be easily crossed by bicycle (there are several rentals in the area). Not to mention tribal villages such as Ban Nam Chang (inhabited by the exponents of the Lao Houay ethnic group) or Ban Jaluensouk (residence of the Khmu ethnic group). Real corners of unspoiled paradise permeated by lush vegetation and sumptuous mountain ranges perfectly visible on the horizon in all their splendour.

But the unspoiled nature of northern Laos is also clearly expressed in the heart of the Tham Chang. And ThamPhoukham caves located in VangVieng, a tiny town on the banks of the Nam Song River. These wonderful natural caves are a perfect paradise for speleologists as well as an ideal testimony of what were once the homes of ancient local populations. Who found refuge here during the Chinese raids of the 19th century. Above all, the cave of ThamPhoukham is definitely not to be missed due to the wonderful lagoon at its foot. A splendid natural cave that invites you to continue towards. The cavity that was once a place of worship. And which still preserves intact a statue of the Buddha lying entirely built in gold.

In the north of Laos, however, there are also the main cities of the territory as well as essential destinations for our trip. The reason for paying due attention to these latitudes is easy to say: if you want to know what to see in Laos beyond the natural wonders described above. It is precisely from here that you have to start to enjoy all the charm of local culture and tradition.

A first step, then, can only be Vientiane. It happensVientiane is a place literally submerged by monuments that fit perfectly with the surrounding landscape to transform everything into a truly timeless place beyond any attempt of imagination. Vientiane, in fact, has a substantially small urban centre, consisting mainly of a few streets along which there are shops, restaurants and various clubs that are almost never crowded. Because all the main attractions of the place are located in the outermost areas of the city.

One of the main historical and cultural wonders of Vientiane is undoubtedly the Pha. That Luang (Great Golden Stupa), a true symbol of the capital as well as of Laos as an impressive. And ancient Buddhist religious structure almost 50 meters high and entirely covered with gold.

However, the other temples in the area are also marvelous: among all, Wat That LuangNeua stands out for the marvelous staircase that leads to the interiors literally covered with dazzling and colorful decorations;

But also Wat That Luang Thai is not far behind: much smaller than Wat That LuangNeua but characteristic due to its white-gold colour that literally hypnotizes the gaze of visitors.

Next to Pha That Luang, moreover, is the gigantic statue of the Sleeping Buddha. Built entirely of gold and a fundamental place of prayer for the local monks. But equally fascinating is the ancient Haw PhraKaew temple, wonderfully surrounded by splendid colourful gardens. It is also home to a characteristic museum of religious art. The oldest temple in Vientiane, on the other hand, is that of Wat Si Saket, which houses 2000 statues of the Buddha in ceramic and silver.

But to savour all the wonderful taste of local daily life you cannot miss a passage between the main popular markets of the city. The Talat Sao Morning Market, for example, is the ideal place to really find everything from fabrics, handcrafted fabrics and jewellery. At the Khua Din Market, however, you can also find precious spices and local foods, typical fruits and medicinal herbs.

LuangPrabang, on the other hand, is the city most frequented by tourists from all over the world. It is the most westernized location in Laos due to a greater presence of clubs of all kinds that attract mainly European and American visitors. The main street (Sisavangvong), specifically, is the main point where hotels, hostels, traditional shops and restaurants that offer typical dishes of the local cuisine are grouped.

Located in the arms of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, LuangPrabang is easily visited on foot or by bicycle. It is not particularly extensive. The wonder of Mount Phou Si, easily reachable from the main streets of the city. And an unmissable destination as a hilly area substantially submerged by trees and uncontaminated vegetation, contributes even more to the desire to be literally enchanted by the charm of the city, top it is possible to stop and enjoy the wonderful landscape below, surrounded by the splendor of the two side rivers.

But LuangPrabang is also unmissable because it is home to stupendous monuments. Among which the former royal palace. Haw Kham stands out in particular. Now transformed into a fascinating museum of local history and tradition. In which the beautiful statue of Buddha Pra Bang, originally from the 11th century.

Wat Xieng Thong (the temple of the golden city) is instead one of the best-known monasteries in all of Laos and one of its most attractive features is undoubtedly. The beautiful staircase that proceeds from its structure to plunge into the waters of the Mekong River.

From a purely naturalistic point of view. However, in LuangPrabang the caves of Pak Ow are definitely not to be missed. An immense hilly expanse dense of limestone rocks which. Inside them, jealously guard many statues depicting the Buddha in the presence of splendid natural waterfalls.

Southern Laos

Too often underestimated by tourists from all over the world, even the southern area of  Laos is no exception for a journey of ancient splendour and literally uncontaminated natural landscapes.

Particularly different from northern Laos in terms of natural conformation, climate and general atmosphere. The southern territories certainly deserve to be included as additional destinations for a trip. That allows you not to give up the most intact charm of the daily life of the native populations. Who still live here among villages and city features even denser with places of worship. And remote corners not to be missed to do full of emotional experiences.

Pakse, for example, is a city that, among the many wonders of Laos. Really has nothing to envy to any other place of local interest.

A real gateway to southern Laos, Pakse is practically an unmissable stop for anyone. Who wants to realize the wonders that populate the southern part of the country. Located in the territory where the Mekong and Xe Don rivers converge. Almost on the border with Thailand, Pakse comes from a colonial past. Which despite having resulted in a contemporaneity in step with the times. Still maintains its historical and traditional charm intact. This is demonstrated, for example, by places such as the Big Buddha which, despite being of recent construction (dates back to 2011), assumes the shape of a complex of buildings that allows you to enjoy one of the most fascinating possible views of the entire city. Managing to extend our gaze to the territories where the two rivers stand out in all their splendour.

But the temples are also splendid. Above all Wat Phabad, the oldest of the temples of this slice of the territory is the protagonist of a belief that would even host a real footprint of the Buddha. But also Wat Luang is not far behind thanks to the number of tourists. That every year draws to itself from all over the world.

Still in southern Laos, another stop to be included in our itinerary could easily be Champasak. It is easy to understand the reason for such a choice: Champasak is the main territory of Laos par excellence where the production of rice is carried out. This is because the surrounding nature is so well cared for and luxuriant that it allows perfect cultivation.

Champasak, specifically, is a real province of south-western Laos (of which Pakse is the capital). Which reserves for visitors endless expanses of green in whose embrace infinite and wonderful natural landscapes unfold.

This is clearly demonstrated, for example, by the unmissable KhonePhapheng waterfall. Today considered the largest and most evocative waterfall in the entire Asian continent. Rated as a kind of Niagara of Asia, KhonePhapheng reaches 12 kilometres in length. And is surrounded by stunning jagged cliffs that further enhance its splendour.

Still in the province of Champasak, however, there are also archaeological areas of unequivocal charm and charm. Among all, in particular, Wat Phu stands out, the oldest temple in Laos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and dating back to the 5th century as a centre of Hindu worship. The visible remains of Wat Phu allow you to admire. What was once an imposing religious architectural complex that is still considered today as the cradle of local history and culture. To the point of representing a fundamental pilgrimage destination.

And to top off a trip to Laos by choosing what to see also in the southern areas. The last stop can only be Savanna khet.

Often considered simply as a point of passage between the main stages of a journey to the heart of the country. Savanna khet actually reserves a whole range of indisputable natural beauties.

More than half of its territory, in fact, is entirely covered with forests that allow trekking lovers to truly find bread for their teeth. Particularly striking are the protected areas of Phou XangHae and Dong Phou Vieng. A real home also for splendid elephants, deer and Intelli.

Savannakhet, however, is also a splendid town made up of characteristic squares (especially the beautiful Talent Yaa), Catholic churches (the one of Santa Teresa is not to be missed) and museums (among which the one dedicated to dinosaurs stands out), where the colonial past coexists peacefully with a present made up of commercial activities in symbiosis with neighbouring Thailand.

When to go to Laos

Once you have selected what to see during a trip to Laos. You have to understand when it is convenient to leave to be sure to go and guarantee yourself a great holiday. That is, made up of splendid itineraries to follow. However, helped by the best possible climatic conditions.

In general, the best time to go to Laos is from November to February. These months, in fact, correspond to the dry season, a climatic condition that allows temperatures to be found generally never above 25  C on average, with peaks of 30  C almost exclusively found in February.

If you can tolerate higher temperatures (we are talking about an average that can easily touch 40  C), the months of March and April can also be useful, even if it is a period in which it is easier to find yourself in the presence of sudden afternoon thunderstorms.

From May onwards, however, temperatures begin to decrease but the rains are much more frequent. With particular intensity especially in the months of August and September.

What to buy as a souvenir

If we want to return from our trip to Laos with some nice souvenirs to keep the memory of the experience. Or to reserve for relatives and friends, at least one of these ideas could be for us:

Sinh: a coloured sarong with a cylindrical shape and rich in particularly fascinating embroideries; it is generally use by women together with silk blouses also for visiting temples;

traditional fabrics: in Laos, there are all kinds and for every taste, woven and hand-dyed according to the ancient local tradition dating back to the 14th century;

woven baskets: those made of bamboo are perhaps the most characteristic. Because they are use daily by the local population for the conservation of rice; there are infinite varieties of them at very low costs;

objects depicting Buddha: shops and markets offer many. Generally almost all handmade and made with precious metals, mainly gold or silver.

Guide Laos

The fact that the city of LuangPrabang, a symbolic city of Laos, is protect by UNESCO. Speaks volumes about how beautiful and characteristic this land is. Contrary to what one might think. It is not only the land of pagodas and stupas but also of breathtaking. And boundless views that always leave tourists speechless. Which are still few, in fact, which makes this area of  Southeast Asia even more fascinating, because it is wild and unspoiled. The beauty of Laos is a peaceful country, where life flows slowly. The cars proceed almost at a walking pace, producing very little noise pollution. The people are kind and patient and religion is not an obsession, but a deeply rooted belief. And in a time when globalisation and its often negative effects are going crazy, what more could you want?

Passport and visa for Laos

Those who are about to leave for Laos must bring both a visa and a valid passport with them. There is no Laotian embassy in Italy. The closest one is in Paris.

The tourist visa, however, can be request at LuangPrabang or Vientiane airport: It costs 35 dollars and, to obtain it, two copies of the complete visa approval and two passport photos must be present. But as these rules are often subject to changes, it is good to always check this information before leaving.

Laos: what to see

Not to be miss, among the many wonders that Laos has to offer its visitors. There is certainly the capital Vientiane. LuangPrabang is no less, where nature and the Buddhist spirit are the masters. The temples that characterize the area have made the fortune of this splendid city. Particularly appreciated by fans of archaeology and ancient history. Anyone who has the opportunity to stay in Laos for a long time. In any case, would do well to plan a visit to the rest of this beautiful country as well.

It is worth going to the north-eastern area, for example, to admire the Plain of Jars, or to the north-western one. Where the melting pot and the mix of ethnic groups have given birth to wonderfully unique cities and atmospheres. A trip to the Mekong River, on whose banks have developed small villages and temples and historic building. Is certainly worth planning.

Laos: when to go

There is no time that is better than others to visit Laos. Any period of the year, in principle, is perfect. From May to October, however, frequent rains can occur. Which do not ruin the holiday but could still cause some unexpected events. Especially if you have planned excursions to inaccessible areas. In the months of November and December, however, Laos is at its peak. It no longer rains. The rivers are full of water and nature grows luxuriant and uncontaminated. Even the dry season offers unmissable landscapes because the river recedes slightly. And makes room for endless vegetable gardens and meadows.

How long to stay

The holiday in Laos cannot last less than four days, which will still be sufficient only. And exclusively to stop in LouangPrabang and Vientiane. Having 10 or 15 days. However, you could plan a visit to Vietnam and Cambodia and tour the country far and wide.

To pack

Wear sober and discreet clothes that respect. Above all, the philosophy of the Asian populations. Much more traditionalist than the European ones. Therefore, avoid skimpy and too short dresses. Prefer items that cover arms, shoulders, chest and legs. If you go to Laos in the dry season, pack a windbreaker, a sweater and a pair of comfortable shoes. Also remember to bring a hat, sunglasses, medicines and passport photos in case there are special bureaucratic needs.

How to get there: flights to Laos

Laos is not directly connected to Italian airports. The quickest way to reach it is to make a stopover in Bangkok and then leave for Vientiane. Where a well-equipped airport is located. From China, Cambodia and Vietnam, this Southeast Asian country is easily accessible. Those arriving by land should not have particular problems. Because the border crossings between neighboring countries are always more or less free.

Entrance-boarding fees

When entering Laos, you have to pay thirty dollars as airport taxes.

While you only pay ten dollars at the exit. Make sure you have them in cash, local currency, or dollars. To be safe, always carry a few extra dollars with you.

Getting around and transport

Internal flights between the main cities of Laos are operated by Lao Aviation. The country’s national airline. Which fly to Vientiane, Louangphrabang, Pakse and Savannakhet. The aircraft in use are not the best. So much so that there are no guarantees on safety in the event of adverse weather conditions. Often, before reaching their destination, they stop at another airport.

Public transport

In Laos, there is no railway network, which is why the most used means of transport is the bus. Unfortunately, however, connections are not widespread and timetables are often approximate. In addition, they are always overloaded with goods and locals. Which is not really a flaw. If you consider that getting to know the local populations is always an interesting experience.

Vehicles for hire

The most convenient solution, on the transport front, is to rent a car with a driver once you arrive on site. In Vientiane, you can choose between off-road vehicles, pickups and cars. But it is always better to contact companies first: Asia Vehicle Rental, at 21-21-217493 and Khounta Rental at 21-513127. In the main cities, alternatively, you will also find mopeds and bicycles to rent directly in the hotels. Finally, you could contact a local agency: there is Asco Laos, for example (856-21213570) which organizes trips within the area of competence. It is run by Italian people, reliable and helpful. Who offer impeccable service and plan the trip in all its details.

Other means

The most suitable way for short trips is the tuk-tuk, which is also fun. These are motorbikes, bicycles or three-wheelers that have been adopted by the locals for the transport of passengers. They are cheaper and more practical than buses, which are not recommended for sightseeing. Watch out for taxis: agree on the price before the driver gets into gear, to avoid running into unpleasant surprises. As for the road network, it should be noted that not all roads in Laos are perfectly paved.

However, efforts are being made to remedy slowly. Nonetheless, there are trucks and buses that let tourists aboard wherever they are. In exchange for truly derisory figures based on the length of the route. With a little luck, you might even experience the thrill of getting onboard a typical songthaew. A van equipped with plastic benches and chairs with a nylon cover that protects from the wind. It is not the best of comfort, of course, but you can make excellent friends on board.

Hotel in Laos: where to sleep

In remote and rural areas, where tourists hardly ever go there, accommodation facilities are scarce. There are various hotels, guesthouses and pensions, however, in the main cities, with price ranges for all budgets. Usually, you spend the night spending between 20 and 80 dollars at most. But there are also low-cost solutions that allow you to stay for 3 or 6 dollars in a room without a bathroom. Ten if you want the toilets all to yourself.

Laos cuisine

Laos cuisine, for better or worse, follows the Asian tradition. And therefore, plenty of rice, accompanied with vegetables, fish and meat of all kinds. Unlike the Thai one, it is not spicy, but it is still very tasty and spicy. Here and there it is possible to find some restaurateurs who follow the French tradition, offering diners pates, croissants and even warm freshly baked baguettes. Lunch and dinner are cheap: the price of a complete meal can vary. Depending on the place, from 2 to 15 dollars. Try the dishes served from the stalls that are located along the busiest streets of the cities.

As already mentioned, those who go to Laos must strictly respect the oriental culture. No skimpy clothes, just garments that don’t leave nakedness or male and female body parts on display. In places of worship, in particular, Laotians are very strict. Always remember to take off your shoes whenever you are about to enter a pagoda. Where you will never have to turn the soles of your feet towards the effigy that depicts Buddha. In general, on the streets, never be loud.

You will immediately notice that the locals whisper and never make a fuss out of respect for others. In art places, resist the temptation to touch the works you are viewing firsthand.

The same goes for the magnificent flowers you will come across in every corner of the territory:

Woe to tear them, they could reproach you. And finally, avoid affectionate attitudes. In Laos, it is not good practice for a couple to hold hands or kiss in public.

Festivals and traditions

In this country, there is always a good reason to celebrate. The popular recurrences, however, are New Year’s Eve, Labor Day, Women’s Day and Nation Day, which commemorates the victory of the Communist Party in 1975.

The new year, in Laos, is greeted in April:

The party lasts for three days and the final ceremony. In which everyone participates wearing traditional clothes. Is seasoned with dances and songs of the popular tradition.

All other recurrences are religious and occur concomitantly with the main events that characterized the life of Buddha. It is, for example, the water festival, which marks the end of the monks’ retreat. Which lasted over ninety days. During which many colorful boats with candles, flowers and incense are paraded on the Mekong. In November, again, the monks gather in the monastery of That Luang, where the faithful. In turn, flock to bring offerings to the temple. March in procession and finally participate in a great fireworks display.

How to organize a trip to Georgia?

Notwithstanding the fact that, before leaving, I had read stories of enthusiastic independent backpackers. Who had experienced Georgia day after day. Planning little or nothing, moving by public transport or hitchhiking. I preferred to rely on an expert. Choosing the stops with a person who knows places, distances, road conditions. And all the information that – still – cannot be found on the net (especially in relation to such a not touristy destination) allowed me to structure a trip to Georgia that satisfied my expectations broadly.

It is also true that I was lucky enough to study the itinerary with Francesco Trecci. An unconditional lover of the country. And a true star in Georgia after the publication of two books! Francesco helped me to build a crazy journey and then he entrusted me to the loving care of a local agency that did the rest.

The plus of a local agency and a guide

The agency that did not sell me a package dealing with intermediation in bookings (I can do it very well independently and I did it). But provided me with a guide who accompanied me during the trip. Able to explain the history and traditions of the country. The wounds still open, the desire for redemption, the generosity of its people.

A guide who has been able to manage program changes while minimizing inconvenience. And again, a guide who, knowing Georgian, has simplified communication. I do not chew Russian – which the over 35 speak fluently in the country. And my English is not decisive because – alas – it is not yet widespread in the most remote villages. That I wanted to visit. Our guide was a treasure. He perfectly understood my tastes and gave us experiences that we will never forget. Canyon boat rides, cave tours, museum visits, city walks but also a lunch with a unique family in the garden of their home. The “groceries” by locals on the side of the road, or a picnic with locals!

Travel to Georgia: how to get there?

We took a flight from Rome with Turkish Airlines that transited through Istanbul before landing in Tbilisi. To save a little, you can take the Pegasus, the Turkish low-cost line. A direct Wizzair flight to Kutaisi also leaves from Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa. Once at the airport, you can take a taxi to get to the center because the costs are meager.

What documents do I need to enter Georgia?

With a passport, valid for at least six months after the date of entry into the country and with an identity card (in paper and electronic format). Provided that you are transiting from Schengen states. An entry visa is not required. Italian citizens can enter Georgia without a visa requirement for one year. If you need more specific information, contact the Embassy of Georgia in Rome

Travel to Georgia: which stages to include?

Our trip lasted 15 days / 14 nights and we wanted to discover as much as possible of this wonderful land! Caucasus, Black Sea, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, canyons, cities, remote villages, monasteries, museums for a total of 2175km!

Days 1-3 Tbilisi. The splendid capital has lost none of its charms thanks to a balanced mix of old and new. The Mtkvari River divides it in two, but the bridges and the cable car connect the banks making Old Tbilisi and the newer districts communicate. Beautiful by day and intriguing at night, with a liveliness that makes European cities pale. Two nights in Tbilisi.

Read What to see in Tbilisi.Days 4-5 Kakheti. The easternmost region of Georgia is rich in history and spirituality although. It is much more famous for producing fine wines. In the two days, we visited Sighnaghi (the city of Love, with cobbled streets and red roofs of houses, and a wall that, if desired, you can walk for a short panoramic stretch over the Alazani Valley), the Bodbe monastery (where there are the remains of Santa Nino, the most revered saint of the country), the Cathedral of Alaverdi, the house-museum of the poet Alexander Chavchavadze in the city of Tsinandali and Telavi.

Between one visit and another, we had two wine tastings:

The first in a stilt house in an organic vineyard and the second in a vineyard where the owner has also created a beautiful accommodation facility—night in Telavi.

Day 6, Caucasus. Travel along the super scenic Georgian military road (which connects Tbilisi to the upper Caucasus to the border with Russia). Visit the Ananuri fortress and the splendid Gergeti Trinity Church in an isolated position at 2170 meters below Mount Kazbek (5047m high). But that we couldn’t see due to fog!) Night in Tbilisi.

Days 7-8 Mtskheta-Gori-Uplistsikhe-Akhaltsikhe. Visit of the monastery of Jvari (included in the Unesco heritage). Which rises from the top of a hill overlooking the confluence of the Mt’k’vari and Aragvi rivers. And the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta. The spiritual heart of the country (included in the Unesco heritage) famous for being the place where Christ’s tunic is buried.

Visit the Stalin Museum in Gori and the nearby rock city of Uplistsikhe. One of the oldest urban settlements in Georgia and an important religious center for pagan cults. Tasting of wines from the Ateni micro-zone and local cheeses in a delightful countryside property.

Visit the Akhaltsikhe Rabati Fortress and the rock city of Vardzia. The cave monastery built by Queen Tamara in 1185, excavated in the side of Mount Erusheli. Two nights in Akhaltsikhe.

Days 9-11 Goderzi Pass-Batumi. Visit the small monastery of Zarzma and off-roads of about 100 kilometers to admire the “adjaran summer settlements”. The remote villages that are populated only in summer in this unspoiled stretch of mountain. Stop at Green Lake and cable car from Goderdzi Ski Resort for a breathtaking view at 2300 meters.

Arrive in Batumi, where relaxation should be the watchword, but Las Vegas on the Black Sea is too lively and full of things to do and see to lounge in a hotel or on a sunbed on the beach. Among the must-see: the Miracle Park, the palm-fringed boulevard full of sculptures, clubs, benches, cycle paths, and sports equipment; the skyline of impressive skyscrapers; The Torre dell’Alfabeto with the restaurant that rises from 130 meters. Also The cable car that connects the port with the hill of Anuri overlooking the city in 15 minutes. And The small fish market and Piazza, the busy square full of bars where you can listen to live music in the evening. Two nights in Batumi.

What to see in Batumi?

Days 12-13 Kutaisi. Visit of the city and the Bagrati Cathedral. And Visit the nearby monasteries of Gelati and Motsameta. Also Visit of the house-museum of the writer Otia Ioseliani and tasting of wines produced by his nephew Otia. Massage in the spa of Tsakaltubo a famous spa town. Tour to the Prometheus caves and rubber boat ride in the Martvili canyon.

Lunch with a family in the Naidjakhavo village and cooking class to prepare an Amarula khachapuri. View of Nikortsminda church and Khavanchkara wine tasting at Ambrolauri. Pic nic with Georgians. Two nights in Kutaisi.

Day 14 Tbilisi. Return to the capital and walk by night in the former Meidan Bazar. Night in Tbilisi.

Day 15 Return flight.

How to move on a trip to Georgia? Car, train, marshrutka or hitchhiking?

By car, no doubt!

There are trains, of course, but they are not very frequent, and the fastest ones (and similar to our standards) connect the main cities such as Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Batumi, Borjomi, Tskaltubo (on this page, you can view the routes and timetables). If you also want to visit remote or simply more decentralized villages, you need to travel by car. The hypothesis of combining buses or minibusses with the train for these routes would require more flexible times and a great ability to adapt since the cheap marshrutkas leave only when they are full.

Hitchhiking is not as risky an idea as you might think since we have been told that several young people travel this way (and it seems to be safe).

Since, like many, we had two weeks of vacation and very little flexibility and as much as we prefer the idea of travel to that of vacation. We did not want to return more tired than when we left. For the trip to Georgia we opted for the car and, more precisely, for a 4 × 4. The main roads are obviously paved and equipped with signs. But the road network that we traveled was secondary and therefore often bumpy and devoid of indications.

Indeed, to see the villages of the Goderzi Pass, we traveled 100 kilometers off-road and it took over 7 hours! Also, for this reason (and because Georgians drive as if they were doing a Formula One race) in addition to driving. We asked for a driver to move around the country. This decision avoided us, as in Cappadocia, from renting a car (costs for a 4x 70/80 $ per day + insurance and advance guarantee). To make and pay for petrol, to park at each stop, and of course to study google maps!

How much does a trip to Georgia cost?

I bring you some practical examples. Guesthouse: 10-15 € per person. 3-star hotel: € 25-30 per person. Lunches: € 5-10 per person. Dinners: € 15 per person. 1L water: 0.40. Petrol: € 0.80 per liter. Museum or attraction ticket: € 1-5 per person.

For 15 days / 14 nights of tour with guide + driver + car + petrol + all entrance tickets for museums / attractions + snacks + most meals + transfer to and from the airport: € 130 per day (for two).

What to pack on a trip to Georgia?

We went in August. If you will do the same itinerary as ours, you will have to consider trekking clothing (boots, technical pants, t-shirt, sweatshirt, and way because in any case, the peaks are around 2500 meters on average), city clothing (with walking shoes and cotton clothing) and beachwear. We were able to pack everything in hand luggage while wearing the bulkier things during the flights. P.S. bring a shawl to put on your head to enter all the Orthodox churches (I solved with a hoodie). Consider that women, in addition to the veil, if they wear trousers (yes, you read that right, trousers!) Must put an additional apron around their waist. The same goes for men in Bermuda shorts. If you forget, no problem, you will find towels at all entrances to use for free.

Itineraries in Georgia: what to visit in 1, 2 or 3 weeks

Many are now writing to me for advice on a good itinerary in Georgia. It always amazes me to think how many of you. With sweet words and a genuine curiosity that transpires from the very first lines. Decide to try a trip to the Caucasus and land in Georgia, between the Black Sea and the snow-capped peaks. I am not surprised, however, when you answer me and ecstatically tell me about your trip. Which in the case of Georgia has the real flavor of discovery. I read your e-mails with a beating heart and eyes in front of which memories pass very quickly – the submerged straw wagons, the jolts of the marshrutka, the taste of freshly baked khachapuri, the dazzling snow on Mount Kazbek.

And i am not surprised because I have the mathematical certainty that you will return in love with this forgotten, troubled strip of land with blinding contrasts, yet with a desire for openness and growth like few other places in the world.

Also i seriously think I will never tire of talking about it. I have designed these itineraries in Georgia to streamline the answers I write to you, hoping to give you useful and interesting ideas. But I wrote them mainly because billions of words are not enough to narrate the genuine beauty of this land and, month after month. There is always something more to say that I have not been able to explain elsewhere.

Important note: follows along (but exhaustive) post that has helped thousands of travelers for free since it was published.

I have created a paginated and printable pdf of the 3 most read posts about the Caucasus and Georgia. Which will guide you step by step in the DIY organization of a trip to the Caucasus. How to organize a trip to the Caucasus, what to see in Tbilisi and which itineraries to do in Georgia – the post you happened upon. You can decide to download this trio of Caucasian posts for a small donation to support this blog which, as you can see, does not host banner ads. You can use the button below or check out the other downloadable posts and previews on my online store. The post will always be available online. But downloading the pdf is a way to say ‘thank you’ and give value to the time spent on this blog. For now, I’ll tell you: thank you!

Now, if you are still unsure whether Georgia will be worth visiting. Or if you just don’t know anything about Georgia, listen to me and read this post.

If you are already motivated but you need a general overview of the area, understand. How the world works at those longitudes. Understand what there is to see, and get all the useful information to organize your trip to the Caucasus do it yourself, read (indeed, save) this other post.

For everything else, there is khachapuri. Which will give you the affection and calories you need to climb even the highest peak.

These itineraries in Georgia are exemplary:

I have been to Georgia a dozen times. But I have never exactly traveled any of these travel drawings. I have often made clips, blocks, discoveries, and strange turns combining Georgia and Armenia, Abkhazia, or Azerbaijan. A little by train, a little by marshrutka, a lot by hitchhiking. Our itinerary in the Caucasus has never been fixed, decided at the table. But always a canvas sensitive to moods, events, meetings. Take a cue, have fun, but above all do not stop commenting, writing to me. And tell me about your Caucasian travels. I await them with joy because they make me relive the beauty of traveling too.

That’s all for today. A hug and happy reading!

On our first trip to the Caucasus, we toured Georgia and Armenia in 19 days. Also managing to enter the separatist region of Abkhazia, militarized by Russia. Partly because we were hitchhiking, partly because we let ourselves be guided by events. We visited a series of very remote and far from touristic areas, leaving out many of the most recurring must-haves on the classic itineraries in Georgia. To fully visit the country and appreciate its rebellious and religious soul, creative, original (and very tasty). It would take at least three weeks. Excluding South Ossetia, which is accessible only from Russia, and in fact also Abkhazia (we have been there. But frankly for us Europeans, it’s not really a joke to go there). There are still many cities and places to visit.

The most famous mountainous regions, a paradise for sportsmen, are Svaneti (with characteristic medieval towers). The region around Kazbegi (the most famous and easily accessible), Tusheti (remote and authentic). And the mountainous region above Kakheti (Lagodekhi ). The Lesser Caucasus is decidedly lower (but the passes still exceed 2000m!), Difficult to reach and not at all touristic, but offers more Middle Eastern and decidedly less alpine landscapes. Even if to appreciate the real desert mountains it is necessary to go as far as Armenia (panoramas incredible from Selim’s Caravanserai).

I have drawn up an example itinerary of 3 weeks, putting in brackets the stages to be skipped in the case of a 2-week itinerary, and assuming a round trip to Kutaisi, served by low-cost airlines.

Georgia’s most overwhelming history and beauty lie in the mountains:

That’s why I included a total of 8 days of trekking in Svaneti, Tusheti. And the Kazbegi area in the three-week itinerary. They are areas that are quite equipped for tourism where it is possible to go camping. Unfortunately, the paths are not always well marked. If you stay in the valley or along the mule track, you don’t need a guide; if instead, you plan to try your hand at complex trekking (Mount Ushba, Mount Kazbek) it is advisable to have one.

Georgia itinerary: 1 week around Tbilisi

Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, is the solution to all the traveler’s dilemmas:

A charismatic city full of things to do located in a strategic position. Which allows you to explore a good part of the country only with day trips. This is his itinerary includes most of the most classic and famous sites in Georgia. But it requires a very fast pace,

However, offset by the comfort of sleeping for four nights in a row in the same accommodation. At the same time, it leaves out all the western regions of Georgia (such as Svaneti or the coast) and Kakheti. The wine region in the east. In place of Vardzia and Borjomi you could try to insert two days in Kakheti, visiting Telavi, Sighnaghi. And other villages at the foot of the Tusheti, or try to go into Tusheti (practically accessible only in summer) or in the Pankisi valley, inhabited by populations Chechens.

1 – Tbilisi, arrival, and visit to the city

2 – Tbilisi, half-day or full-day trip to Mtskheta

3 – Tbilisi, full-day trip to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda)

4 – Tbilisi, full-day trip to Davit Gareja (border with Azerbaijan)

5 – Akhaltsikhe, visit the site of Vardzia, Akhaltsikhe, and the nearby monasteries

6 – Borjomi, visit the area // or full day in Tbilisi // or half-day in Gori

7 – Visit Tbilisi and return

Trip to Georgia: 1 week around Kutaisi

If, on the other hand, you have a round trip to Kutaisi, reached by the Hungarian low-cost Wizzair. You could try your hand at a more unusual Georgia itinerary, dedicated to the central and western regions.

Even if any Georgian will joke saying “you know, I didn’t like Milan very much, it reminded me of Kutaisi …”, Kutaisi is a city that is changing at the speed of light – both thanks to the opening of low-cost flights to Europe. But above all, it is the true historical Georgian capital. The cradle of the Iberian Caucasian culture.

The center is small but all in all nice, full of statues, new hostels at a good price. And small cafes, to be explored in half a day. The surroundings offer more, such as large caves, frescoed cathedrals (Gelati and Bagrati are UNESCO sites), and more. The easiest way to get around all the attractions is to bargain an honest price with a taxi driver (the equivalent of 20 euros for half a day can go). Otherwise, there are marshrutkas that depart from behind the Kutaisi Opera House. And reach all destinations with frequency (in high season).

The western regions of Georgia, on the other hand, are still not very touristy except Svaneti and Batumi. A city that seems to us a Las Vegas with a post-Soviet aftertaste.

But of which the Georgians are very proud:

Our friends have defined it rather as a Barcelona of the Caucasus, free-spirited, artistic and bohemian. In my first (and only) visit to the city no

I hadn’t appreciated it at all. However, 3 years have now pass and I imagine, given the growing Turkish and European tourism. That the offer has expanded and has become a more varied and interesting city. The beaches and water are clean but still better in the north, in Abkhazia.

what to see in Kutaisi

1 – Kutaisi, visit the city and Bagrati Cathedral

2 – Kutaisi, visit of the surroundings of Kutaisi (Prometheus caves, Gelati monastery, Katskhi’s column, cableway)

3 – Svaneti region (Mestia or Ushguli), with a stop in Zugdidi

4 – trekking in Svaneti

5 – Batumi

6 – a visit to Tbilisi // or visit to Vardzia (car or driver needed)

7 – Kutaisi, return

That’s all for today, but in the blog you will still find a wealth of other information, looking in the Caucasus category.

Books about Georgia

Your presence is like a city, by Ruska Jorjoliani

Wonderful review by Claudia Giromondolibri for a Georgian from Svaneti who writes in Italian and now lives in Sicily.

Georgia. In the Mountains of Poetry, by Peter Nasmyth (in English)

A travel monument to Georgia, written by someone who has explored this country from top to bottom for over thirty years, from the last Soviet years to today.

Holy Darkness, by Levan Berdzenishvili

With the translation by Francesco Peri, who was our guest in the latest episode of Cemento Podcast. This book is one of the very few contemporary Georgian authors to have been translated into Italian. It tells of the experience in the Gulag of the 1980s, with a distinctly Georgian spirit and eye.

We are on our second trip to Georgia, the pearl of the Caucasus. 12 years have passed since our first visit. So it is the first trip we make to Georgia with children, indeed with the child. Who is now 9 years old. How the nation has changed, how many tourists. Before leaving, many thought we were crazy to make this trip, but now I’ll tell you the truth: Georgia is a well-tested, pleasant, amazingly beautiful and varied, very safe tourist destination … only we in Europe didn’t realize it.

Those who have noticed it are the travelers from the Gulf countries … Emirati, Saudis, Kuwaiti, Iranians … all in the family with small children. Just to be precise (and not to judge): people accustomed to comfort, certainly not backpackers looking for adventure. So yes, Georgia is a child-friendly country… and my advice is to visit it now before it’s too fashionable. It will be no coincidence that people call Georgia the “pearl of the Caucasus”.

I will not be the one to explain Georgia to you. And I am not qualified and there are much more accurate books and guides. But at least some information I want to give you – in a somewhat messy way. “Continental” Georgia is located in Causaso, between Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. While its coasts (on the Black Sea) also border on Turkey. And then there are the disputed territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, now occupied by the Russians.

Georgia is very small, in the sense that it has more or less the area of  Ireland, but with one million fewer inhabitants. If you prefer another comparison: it is as large as a quarter of Italy and has half the Swiss population. A question that many people ask is: is Georgia located in Europe or Asia? Well, no one can say for sure, given that the nation is right on the dividing line that separates Europe from Asia. But if you ask a Georgian how he feels, he will certainly say European. School geography would say, Asia.

A trip to Georgia, the pearl of the Caucasus, will take you to the center of a crossroads of religions. And ethnicities even if Orthodox Christians are the majority. If you take a taxi, you will soon discover how important religion is. The drivers spend a good part of their time making the sign of the cross three times every time they pass a church. And since there are so many churches, they rarely have both hands on the wheel. Not necessarily related is the fact that the number of fatal accidents in Georgia is decidedly concerning.

Still on the subject of religion: the national saint is Nino, which is however a feminine name. It is written like this and I don’t add anything else: reading Georgian characters is simply impossible. History has it that in the third century AD a woman named Nino came to Georgia to preach and introduce Christianity. The name Nino in this Caucasian nation is still very widespread, so if a woman presents herself as such. Don’t look at her in a strange way: she certainly hasn’t gone under the scalpel!

Tbilisi is a fascinating city, full of contrasts and a little melancholy. Its old town is splendid, full of charm, with its small houses and balconies decorated with lace. Get off the main streets, even slightly, for a truly decadent Tbilisi. The new part, along with via Rustaveli, is all a succession of buildings from the early 1900s, often sumptuous. And then there is the area of the ancient sulfurous baths, still in operation. To be absolutely tried during a trip to Georgia with children. My son loved the experience with scratching (scrub) at the Orbelliani baths.

How to see in the capital? Everything and nothing, in the sense that there is no particular attraction. It is a city to be seen slowly, where it is nice to get lost. If you are in Georgia with children I recommend that you spend a maximum of 3 days in Tbilisi. As there are few specific attractions for the little ones. My son found it pleasant but not surprising. Do not miss the Museum of Illusions (the least typical there can be) and the Bridge of Peace on the Mtkvari River, especially at night. What the locals say looks like a tampon (I confirm!).

When we say Gori we say, Stalin, since this town about 80 km from Tbilisi is famous only for being the birthplace of Iosif Vissarionovic Dugavili, better known as Stalin. Here in a simple house in 1879 the “little father of peoples” was born. We chose to visit Gori with our son to show him not so much the museum but the train car (highly armored). On which Stalin was traveling. Since the man of steel was afraid of flying.

Seeing the old train was interesting for him: he looked at the valves and said:

But his grandfather has the same in the house! And it’s all true.

We combined Gori with the visit of Mtskheta, to (re) see the splendid frescoes now a UNESCO heritage site and the monastery of Jvari. On the hill in a panoramic position at the confluence of two rivers. Here Santa Nino erected the first cross in Georgian territory. This part of the visit did not go very well:

Our son would probably have preferred Uplistsikhe. The ancient city carved into the rock 10 km from Gori. We didn’t plan it because we wanted to visit the Davit Gareja monastery, which also has a cave complex.

Kazbegi does not exist, even if everyone recognizes the name … in truth, the main town of this area of the Caucasus is Stepandsminda, while Kazbegi is the name of the mountain that overlooks it, 5048 meters high. If you are lucky you will see it free from the clouds, with its conical shape and it’s top covered with snow. Stepandsminda is located about 2.5 hours drive from Tbilisi. And is, therefore, an easy destination to reach. If you are planning a trip to Georgia with children. The landscape is splendid and in fact, they call it the pearl of the Caucasus.

The town can be reached along the historic Georgian military road. That connects Tbilisi to the Russian city of Vladikavkaz (in North Ossetia, Russia). The route winds through wild valleys, snow-capped peaks, ancient defensive towers, nomadic settlements and cows, and much more. It alone is worth the trip. Once you arrive it is practically obligatory to visit the small church of Tsminda Sameba in Gergeti (in the past it was on the cover of Lonely Planet). But if you have time, visit the semi-deserted side valleys: They are spectacular, especially that of Juta.

Davit Gareja

Davit Gareja Monastery has located about 100 km from Tbilisi. And is not only an ancient and suggestive monastery. But also an ancient city carved into the rock (there are more than 5000 cells, to the delight of children). The journey along the mostly dirt road. Which crosses an arid and semi-desert area.

Is truly breathtaking:

You are truly in the middle of nowhere. Davit Gareja consists of the main monastery – Lavra – and the Udabno complex. Both date back to around 1500 years ago and are one of the holiest places in Georgia; still today it hosts a monastic community.

On our previous trip to Georgia, after visiting the monastery and seeing the cells. We walked up to Udabno (about 1 hour’s walk) right on the border with Azerbaijan. I remember we were told to pay special attention to snakes. So we weren’t sure we wanted to go with our son.

Problem solved on the spot:

A few weeks earlier some Azerbaijani border guards had stolen religious objects inside some caves. Creating evident friction between his nations – and the path was closed.

Kakheti is not a place but a fairly large area where 50% of Georgia’s wine is produced. We expected to see vineyards everywhere, perhaps terraced, and from the landscape point of view, we were disappointed. The visits we made, however, were satisfactory, and we tasted many excellent wines. Tsinandali proved to be particularly popular with us adults. Our son was patient and if he didn’t like it, he didn’t let it out. Maybe he enjoyed seeing his mum a little sparkling (after only two glasses).

What to see in Kakheti? In this corner of Georgia, you have to take the children to Napareuli and visit the Twins Wine Cellar Museum. They will be very happy to see the very, or the typical amphorae. Where the wine is left to rest for months and months. Other than our barrels! Furthermore, in this stage of your trip to Georgia. You cannot miss a visit to the fortress of Gremi and the town of Signage. They call it the city of love even though I don’t understand why. But I guess it’s because of the romantic walls of the fortress. That surrounds it.

A small corner of tropical paradise. Where Hindu temples alternate with expanses of rice fields and kilometers of white sand beaches. This is Bali, or rather an idealization that does not always correspond to the truth. The reality of this small Indonesian island is much more complex than it seems. And the changes it has undergone over time are many. Evident in the eyes of those who know it well.

Bali is one of the 17,508 islands that make up the Indonesian archipelago. And in 2015 alone welcomed more than 4 million foreign tourists. A portion that already constitutes 41% of the annual tourists. Of all Indonesia according to statistics compiled by the central office of the Balinese tourism.

Of the many tourists who travel to Bali to enjoy its natural beauty and indulge in a spiritual break. There are those who stay for well over a couple of weeks. In fact, there are many expats who permanently reside in Bali. And who have started their own businesses. Also taking advantage of the opportunity to enjoy a quality standard of living at much more affordable prices than Western ones. According to the Bali tourist office, the main European nationalities present in Bali are English and French. Followed by German and Italian.

We spoke to two members of the large Italian community residing in Bali, M. and B. Who consider the island their physical and spiritual refuge. B. arrived in 1981, aboard a small shaky plane, attracted by the enthusiastic stories of friends. And since she set foot on the island she has never been able to part with it. Here he built houses and opened three clothing, accessories and furniture shops in the busiest area of the island, Semi yak.

Even M. was immediately bewitch by what she defines as “magical energies” of Bali. And she chose this strip of land in the middle of the Indian Ocean to build a Vedic house. Where she can dedicate herself to meditation and spend time with her Dear. People like them know Bali almost like the local inhabitants. And they know how to describe us, sometimes with a hint of nostalgia in their voice. How they have seen the island change over time.

Upon his arrival 38 years ago, B. remembers an island scented with cloves and a warm welcome. The buildings were no taller than coconut trees, connected by a few roads. And surrounded by rice fields and expanses of Alan. The tough and elongated grass used to build the roofs of houses. There were also very few cars and the main means of transport was the bicycle. The change that strikes her most is the radical decrease in available “living” space.

Today the view of the sky is obscure by tangles of electric wires and tall buildings, B. Tells us, and the streets multiply and branch off, congested by the typical traffic of large cities. Hotels and private villas follow one another without interruption, attached to each other. And every free centimeter is now use by local owners to build and rent at ever-higher prices. M. also remembers a very different situation from today when he arrived in 2001. When the cows grazed outside his garden. And he could only get to his door by passing through expanses of dry rice fields. However, according to both, although the lifestyle and business management of the Balinese have changed in many ways. Some aspects of the local identity remain unchanged. The rites and ceremonies established by the Balinese calendar characterize a fixed. And priority commitment to any other for the local community.

In recent years Bali has become one of the most famous islands of the Indonesian archipelago. And has attracted an unstoppable flow of tourists. Which in 2017 were 5 million more than in 2009 according to the Bali tourism office.

Despite the influx of foreigners and small and large investors to Bali. The Indonesian government seems to be trying to preserve the land in the hands of the original owners.

An agrarian law passed in 1960, “hakpakai”, still regulates the management of land. And establishes that “only Indonesian citizens can own the land” (Article 9). Article 21 then explicitly states that “foreigners cannot be the nominal owners of the land.” Those who build a house or hotel in Bali today can therefore rent a portion of land. From the Balinese owners for a well-defined period but have no right to become the owner. A very common “trick” among foreign buyers is to pass for an Indonesian “figurehead” to buy the land permanently and become the owners.

Contracts normally last from 25 to 30 years and payment is make all at once. When the contract is sign. Which can then be renew for an unlimited number of years. But today the prices increased exponentially. And the value of the land is estimate on centimeter’s rather than meters in order to maximize rental income. B. remembers that her first house, built on a total of 34 areas (the equivalent of 3400 square meters) had cost her approximately 7000 dollars. While today she would have to renovate her rent of the land. Which counts half of the original area. to cost at least $ 100,000 a year. According to B. from such an exponential increase in prices also derives different management of the free space available compared to the past.

While large private houses previously stood in spacious areas and enjoyed large gardens. Expensive rents have prompted buyers to concentrate the construction of villas and large hotels on ever-smaller areas.

Investors who have come to Bali to invest in this sector come from all over the world: Europe, Australia, New Zealand, China but also from Indonesia itself. This type of business owner is flanked by those. Who invest in activities in the catering sector and in the trade of artefacts and pieces of furniture. Taking advantage of the affordable prices of raw materials and the availability of skilled labour to work them.

Building speculation has upset the island’s economy. Which is now strictly dependent on tourism and the performance of the international market. The majority of locals do not seem to be ill-disposed towards those. Who buy and build on their land and have found a way to take advantage of the changes to improve their standard of living. The development of the tourism sector has opened up new professional opportunities: maids, night guards, handymen, cooks and masseurs at home are now more in demand by both ex-pats and tourists, diversifying the job market.

The island has been enriched on average: according to Indonesia:

Strategic Vision for Agriculture and Rural Development. A publication signed by the Asian Development Bank and the Ministry of Agriculture, Bali, from 1997 to 2002. Saw the number of inhabitants decrease drastically below the threshold of poverty: on the island is 8.25% of the population. A figure substantially different from the average in Indonesia, where 21.1% of the population lives in poverty.

However, there are also many Balinese who have taken antagonistic positions towards invasive projects. Usually promoted by the central government and by wealthy Indonesian entrepreneurs.

Proof of this is the demonstrations in opposition to the Benoa Bay reclamation project (200 hectares of mangroves, 5 rivers and villages), drawn up in 1994 by PT Bali Benoa Marina and designed to create a tourist megastructure, intended to include luxury resorts, shopping mall complexes, an amusement park and a golf course. The civil alliance “ForBali” has highlighted the environmental damage. And the threats of flooding for the villages near the area that this project would entail. In July 2015, around 1,500 people demonstrated outside the Bali governor’s office. The project is stalled for the moment and the final decision will be up to Jakarta.

The advent of tourism and the boom in investments inevitably changed the corporate structure and lifestyle of the Balinese. The agricultural sector is giving more and more space to that of services linked to tourism. Where the new generations of Balinese are looking for work opportunities. Often abandoning the land and rice fields cultivated by families for decades to go and live in the city. The lifestyle of the local populations remains frugal. Even if they benefit from a few more services – including access to electricity and motorized means of transport. The use of families to live in the same house survives as well as the observance of religious rites. The glue that unifies Balinese society and keeps its cultural identity alive.

The cultural and religious singularity of Bali distinguishes it from all the other islands of the Indonesian archipelago. Being the only one to practice Hinduism. The potential for investment in an ever-growing tourism sector, combined with the devaluation of the rupee following the Asian financial crisis in 1998. Attracted foreign and regional capital to the island, and consequently, Indonesian workers seeking employment.

In addition to the large investments of wealthy Indonesians. In fact, many young Indonesians come to Bali from Java, Sumatra and neighboring islands to work as workers or open small businesses in the tourism sector, such as surf schools and beach shacks. J.’s story in Bali begins just like that. Originally from Sumatra, after spending a few years working in Jakarta. Which he defines chaotic. He moved to Bali with a group of friends and has been living there for the past 10 years. Returning home only once a year to celebrate Ramadan with their family.

Initially, he worked in an art shop and then, once he learned to surf and speak English. He rented a portion of the beach. Where he could have sunbeds and give surf lessons for a fee to tourists. When we ask him if the crowds of foreigners who come to Bali annoy him. He laughs amused and claims that all Balinese like tourists because they bring money and fun. When we mention HakPakai and ask him if he finds a right law. He claims to agree with this provision. Because Bali cannot become “Chinese” like Singapore and lose its typicality.

People like B. and M. have a very different perception of the island. Who while still considering it unique and special. Are aware that the gentrification it has suffered as a result of tourism has stripped it of many of its beauties. However, the Balinese cannot be mistaken as impotent inhabitants. Who passively suffer the effects of tourism and globalization in a broader sense, being “infected” by external influences. But it would be too simplistic and almost paternalistic a vision.

It is right for people to participate in the development that directly affects it, and to benefit from it. The local population has in fact been able to manage a phenomenon of immigration of people and capital of enormous magnitude. Which has invested its small island with an overwhelming force and transform it into an economic. But also a social one, without compromising the cultural core of the island. And perhaps this is precisely where Bali’s greatest strength lies, destined to always remain so despite the extra layers of concrete and smog that are accumulating.

When organizing a trip, there always comes a time for a thousand doubts. You begin to wonder if you are going to a dangerous land, such as Bali in August. What are the foods that are best not to eat, the rules of conduct for a “good traveller” and, in general. What are the risks and difficulties. Here, if you are in this phase of organizing your holiday in Bali, listen to us:

Leave fears and worries out of your suitcase, and you will live a memorable travel experience.

How to organize a holiday in Bali without errors

If you want to plan everything in the best possible way. Just follow the many practical tips you will find on our website. Or contact us for any curiosity and last-minute questions. Last but not least: try not to make some of the mistakes most common to the majority of Bali tourists. And you will be able to enjoy your holiday and save yourself unpleasant surprises.

1. Choose carefully the period of your holiday in Bali.

We will never stop repeating it: choosing when to come to Bali should be one of your priorities. When you start planning your holidays. On the island, the days are sunny most of the year. But there are months of the year when the climate becomes less humid, rainy and muggy. And don’t think that it is enough to come on holiday to Bali in August to solve the problems:

Every season has its pros and cons, like anywhere in the world.

Between May and August Bali is the most pleasant and favorable period to visit the island. A period that coincides – obviously – with the high season. The months between October and April are instead characterized by occasional rains and covered skies: certainly, this does not affect the beauty of the places to visit and the possibility of going to the beach and returning home with an enviable tan. Finally, don’t forget to check the dates of the most important cultural events on the island. Such as the Bali Kites Festival and Nyepi, the famous “Day of Silence” and New Year on the Balinese calendar.

2. Don’t overdo the luggage.

This is a common mistake when travelling, especially to exotic destinations like Bali. Don’t stuff your suitcase with too many clothes or shoes, as you probably won’t be wearing them. The island is ideal for comfortable and simple clothing, and if you need an additional change of shirts, shorts or sandals, shopping in Bali will be fun and at a low cost.

Also remember that light luggage also means more space for gifts: a visit to the local crafts district and thousands of souvenir shops will help you fill the empty space left in your suitcase. Don’t forget to negotiate the price of your purchases, this will also be part of your travel experience.

3. Change the money on arrival.

There is no need to change euros into Indonesian rupiahs already in Italy: exchange rates in Bali are better. ATMs are quite common and most hotels and tourist restaurants accept Visa and Mastercard credit cards. Homestays, guesthouses and small local restaurants will most likely ask for cash payment.

In any case, at the arrivals of Denpasar airport, you will find an ATM: we suggest you take advantage of it immediately. So you will have enough liquidity to pay for your taxi and basic needs. If it does not work, change a few tens of euros at the exchange office. But just the strictly necessary for the first day because you know. In all airports the exchange rates are always not very advantageous.

Small note: when you visit an exchange desk, always check the money IMMEDIATELY AFTER the exchange. Beware of small unofficial exchange rates that you find on the street: they attract customers with very favorable rates. But often reserve large scams. Make sure you always count your changeover last and do so before you leave the store. To avoid unpleasant inconveniences, go to authorized exchanges that do not require any fees.

4. Watch out for traffic!

Never take the information you find on the Internet for certain (even those of Google Maps): traffic varies a lot year after year, and also according to months.

If you rent a scooter, remember to always carry your international driving license with you and wear a helmet: the police constantly check tourists and, in addition to this. It is a matter of your personal safety and compliance with the law.

With the increase in tourism in recent years, traffic in Bali has become truly remarkable: most of the roads are quite narrow and often clogged with cars. Especially in the Canggu, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Kerobokan area. Always ask the hotel staff for information on the roads and an estimate of the time needed. So as to identify the most suitable times for travel. during your Bali vacation

5. Activate insurance.

NO, don’t even think about it as a joke. You cannot leave without having taken out adequate health insurance!

In Bali, there are no longer cases of travelers seeking help through Facebook or crowdfunding sites to cover hospital expenses after. For example, a car accident or surfing.

Mind you, it’s not about wanting to be alarmist or creating panic: this island is an extremely safe and pleasant place. However, dealing with traffic is not an easy task. Especially on a moped. And the driving style in Asia is very different from what we are used to. Why risk ruining your holiday, when with a small individual investment you can protect yourself and sleep peacefully?

6. Don’t always stay in the same place.

Going on vacation to Bali doesn’t have to mean staying only in Ubud, Kuta or Seminyak. There are many places to visit, including remote areas such as the central highlands. The unknown east coast and the quiet north of the island.

Choosing to stay overnight only in one place will keep you away from discovering really interesting places!

This is why it is a good idea to plan an itinerary by evaluating the location of the hotel with EXTREME CARE. Especially based on the required travel times. In this way, you will not waste precious time in transfers and you can explore different areas of the island. Three or four nights per stage is more than enough to guarantee coverage of all areas, trust me.

7. Sim card and local Wi-Fi

You will find Wi-Fi in almost every hotel and restaurant. If you need to ensure a good connection quality. When you book the hotel we suggest that you always send a speedtest screenshot. And read the reviews about it on Booking or Airbnb.

Many facilities are even equipped with fast ADSL or fibre optic, but many others are not. Do you want to be on the safe side? Choose a coworking nearby.

Beyond Wi-Fi, while exploring you may need to check out an itinerary on Google Maps or check the most up-to-date exchange rate before deciding whether or not to change your euros. We, therefore, recommend that you buy a local SIM with a data package.

The cost of a prepaid card with 2 GB of traffic varies, depending on the operator. From 70,000 IDR (about 5 euros) to 100,000 IDR (about 8 euros) and you can buy it already at the airport or at the points of sale of the various telephone operators. or even in supermarkets. A truly negligible investment, which will be able to greatly simplify your holiday. Just know that the maximum validity of the SIM will be thirty days:

Foreigners cannot register with sim cards with a longer duration.

8. Treat the price, but with respect.

Shopping and bargaining can be a fun part of your Bali holiday, among art markets and stalls. The advice is to start the negotiation by proposing half (or even a third!) Of the price offered at the beginning and continue upwards, always politely, without being offensive or too harsh. Don’t go overboard in bringing the price down: A handful of euros doesn’t mean much to you, but for many Balinese, it doesn’t.

Follow your instinct to understand when it is better to stop and accept the price proposed by the seller. Especially if you are still on a figure that differs by a few tens of thousands of rupees (1-2 euros) from the amount you had set. You will be thrilled with your deal and you will have made the merchant happy too for making a sale.

9. Vacation in Bali, yes, but with respect

Each place of worship has rules and restrictions to be respected.

To visit the temples in Bali, a very simple dress code is applied: a sarong and a sash around the waist. Which most of the time will be delivered to you at the entrance of the temple for free or with a small donation to rent them.

When there are prayers going on, it might be tempting to take a picture of the scene or walk around the devotees: well, know that it is considered very rude. Although it is unlikely that anyone will prevent you. There are some areas in temples where access is prohibited because they are dedicated only to prayers and ceremonies: if you want to know if you can take pictures, always ask your guide, a local or the temple priest.

  1. Lovina Beach

This very long beach is located on the northwestern coast of the Indonesian island. And is located 5 kilometres west of Singaraja, the seat of the Buleleng regency.

It is not for nothing that the dolphins are the symbol of the city of Lovina or rather of the group of villages that make up this city.
