Once you’ve found the door, you can walk through it and find yourself in another place that has its own maze. The doors keep opening up and revealing new places to wander, so your journey will never end. This travel guide is for you to enjoy your vacation in Bali.
Is Bali Safe for Tourists?
Because of earthquakes and tsunamis, Bali isn’t a good place to go for long. In 2018, Indonesia as a whole was hit by 2,000 natural disasters, which killed nearly 4,000 people, forced 3 million people out of their homes, and left much of the country in a state of chaos.
Because tourism makes up more than a quarter of Bali’s GDP, your trip could help the economy. But be aware of the risk of natural disasters and the damage they’ve already caused.
In addition, targeted crimes like robberies and pickpocketing can happen to people who travel. Terrorism is a problem all over the country, but the U.S.
Department of State doesn’t say that Bali is the center of the problem. This is because a quarter of all accidents in Bali are fatal, and renting scooters is a popular tourist activity that doesn’t require a lot of training.
Foreigners get hurt in traffic accidents in Bali all the time, whether they’re pedestrians, passengers, or drivers, and they happen all the time.
How to Reach Bali?
By Air
A big airport called Ngurah Rai International Airport, which is also called Denpasar International Airport, is in charge of getting the city there. It is the third busiest airport in Indonesia, and it is also one of the best.
Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, Qatar Airways, and Singapore Airlines are just a few of the international airlines that fly out of this airport, but there are a lot more. People from Indonesia can get to Bali on many domestic flights.
After you get your visa to Indonesia, figure out where you’re going to leave from. Book your flight to the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali with a carrier of your choice and go to the airport.
All four major airports in India have a lot of different airlines that can get you to Bali. These airlines are Etihad Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas Airways, Thai Airways, and Singapore Air. If you want to go to Bali, flights from Chennai and Cochin are often the cheapest.
Air Asia might have cheap flights if you book early. You can get your round trips done for INR 20,000, which is the best way to get to Bali. One flight will have a stopover in Kuala Lumpur.
Make sure you have your visa before you leave because Indians need a visa to land in Kuala Lumpur. You can also think about taking a number of different carriers, which will cost less than taking a round trip.
However, there is a chance that multiple carriers could be delayed because of late flights from the beginning to the end of the trip. In other words, if you take a lot of different planes, you can land in Singapore instead of Malaysia and not have to get a visa there.
So if you’re coming from India, you can either stop in Kuala Lumpur and take a connecting flight, or you can go to Singapore with a lot of different planes. Choose what you want. Another way to get to Bali is to fly to Bangkok and then take a flight to Bali.
By Sea
Many of the cruise ships that go through South-East Asia make a stop in Bali. if you want to go to Bali by sea, then take a flight from Singapore. Book a cruise from either of these places and go to Bali.
However, it’s not a good idea or practical to go to Bali by ship because the seas can get rough and make the trip unpleasant and unpleasant. You can instead take a flight from the places above to Bali without any trouble.
By Road
You can’t get there by public transport like bus or train. You need to land in one of the cities near Bali and then take a ferry that goes between the cities. This is how you get to Bali. The most popular ferry ride is the one from Jakarta to Bali, which takes 23 hours and is a long one at that.
Taking a bus isn’t a good idea because it’s one of the most tiring trips you can ever make. However, if you want to take a train, you can take one to Banyuwangi and then change to a ferry to get to Bali.

How Much Does It Cost to Travel around Bali?
Bali is a very cheap place to go, so it’s not hard to visit the island and not break the bank. If you know where to look, Bali can still be very cheap. Based on where you stay, I think $50 a day is a good estimate of how much money you’ll need to travel around Bali very comfortably.
Here are my tips for traveling to Bali on a budget!
Accommodation
There are a lot of great budget hotel in Bali if you like to meet new people. My favorite place to stay is a private villa on Airbnb. I’ve even found some for as little as 350,000 IDR ($25 USD) a night. Jungle vibes, pretty pools, and cliff-side views are all over the island, so look for them.
Canggu/Seminyak Area
Kos One Hostel: This is a very hip and stylish hostel. It has a beautiful pool and a great buffet breakfast.
La Boheme Canggu: This property is also one of the best places to stay in Canggu. Beds cost $11 per night.
Ubud Area
Run House B&B: Rooms at the Ubud Area Run House B&B are air-conditioned and have free WiFi. It is near the Ubud Palace and the Monkey Forest. Rooms with two beds start at $13 per night!
WW Backpackers: This is a popular hostel in Ubud that is close to all of the best places to see.
Suka’s House B&B: There is an outdoor pool and private rooms start at $25 USD at Suka’s House Bed and Breakfast. There is also a restaurant, a bar, and a hot spring. Every day, breakfast is served on the terrace that looks out over the garden.
Transportation
Taxis are the most expensive mode of transportation in this area. In Bali, it’s very cheap to rent a motorbike, and it’s the “way.” 30,000-50,000 IDR ($3-$5 USD) a day, so you can hire one. Use the GO-JEK app to get around if you don’t want to drive. You’ll be on the back of a motorbike when you do this.
Meals
Food alone would make a trip to Bali worth it even if hotel prices were sky-high. Mouthwatering foods like nasi goreng (fried rice), mie goreng (noodles), and noodle soup are all around.
Local food and street food can cost as little as $1 USD. A plate of chicken, rice, and vegetables might only cost you $1.30 USD. Warungs are restaurants in Indonesia that serve food from all over the country at low prices.
To make things even better, warung food is often very fresh.
Look for vegan delis and brunch cafes all over the island. Food and drink costs can range from about $15 to $18 per day. You can spend that much money.
Spa Services
One of the best things about Bali is that the spa services are very cheap. A one-hour massage at a massage house costs about 80,000 IDR ($6 USD) on almost every street.
If you ever want to spend money, go to a spa at one of the many high-end hotels.
Activities
There’s a lot to do and see in Bali. When you want to go on a tour around the island, hire a local driver and split the cost with someone else.
If you want to hire a driver for less than 300,000 IDR ($23 USD) for the day, you can go to places like Mount Batur and the Pura Gunung Kawi Temple. Check to see if you can get some beach activities like parasailing for around 150,000 IDR ($11 USD).
Shopping
Shopping in Bali is also a great place to buy things made by local people. It’s one of the best places to go shopping.
When you go to the store, you’ll find that you can get the price down by more than half. At most vendors, you can usually get a typical pair of colorful, loose-fitting pants for less than $4 USD (50,000 IDR). This is a good starting point.
How do I Get Around Bali Cheap?
It’s likely that you’re thinking about how to travel around in Bali for all your adventures and trips. There may not be as many public transportation options in Bali as in other parts of Southeast Asia, but there are still a lot of cheap ways to get around.
There are seven ways you can get around in Bali on a budget, and I’ll show you how to use them in this guide.
1. Rent a Motorbike
Motorbike rental in Bali can be the most efficient and cheap way to get around the island, depending on your itinerary, where you stay, your budget, and how much experience you have.
A full tank of gas costs about Rp20,000. You can rent a scooter for about Rp60,000-70,000 a day, and you can buy one for about Rp20,000.
An international license is required to ride a motorbike, but the renter won’t do anything about it. However, if the police stop you and find out that you don’t have a license, you will be fined.
Scooter rental is the best way to get around in Bali if you don’t want to go far. When you ride a motorbike for a long time, the weather can be hot and the air you breathe is dirty and dusty. This can make the ride uncomfortable.
Also, parts of Bali are very crowded and can get very busy with traffic (Denpasar, Canggu, Ubud). To the north and east, some roads are very narrow and curvy and wind through the hills.
Motorcyclists who are experienced and confident should try this option. There have been a lot of motorcycle accidents in the last few years.
2. Kura-Kura
Kura Kura is the best public bus in Bali. As of 2018, you can take the shuttle bus to get to most of the popular places in Bali (Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Ubud, Sanur, Jimbaran, Uluwatu, Nusa Dua).
As a one-way fare, the cost of Kura Kura is only Rp20,000, but the price can go up to Rp80,000 depending on which line you’re on.
The shuttle bus is new, clean, and air-conditioned, and it comes with free Wi-Fi and electronic charging ports. If you’re going to be moving between towns while you’re there, you might want to buy their 1-day, 3-day, or 7-day passes.
Depending on which line you are on, the shuttle bus leaves every 20 minutes. It also leaves every 45 minutes, 90 minutes, and two hours. Check your line’s departure times on their website.
3. GoJek
To use the GoJek app, you can quickly book a driver for a bike or a car to take you from point A to point B.
They are the cheapest way to get around in Bali. It will cost about Rp20,000 (less than $2) for a 20-minute ride. As a general rule, there are usually more motorbike drivers than car drivers. This means that your wait time is also very short. In the past, I have never had to wait more than a few minutes for something.
You can also get around town faster on a motorbike than you can in a car, because you can weave through traffic and get to your destination much faster than a car. As long as you use the app, you can only go 25 km with a motorbike driver hired. So, you can’t hire a motorbike driver to go a long way with you.
If you want to go across town, I’d go with Kura Kura or a Go-Car service so that you can relax in air conditioning (which you’ll appreciate in the hot weather!).#4 Grab
Grab is the same as Uber in Bali. Grab also delivers food for about the same price as Go-Jek. There’s about a 30-minute drive from the airport to the city of Sanur, and the GrabCar fare is about Rp60,000 (about $8). (same as Go-Car). There are also metered taxis, which cost between Rp100,000 and 130,000 depending on how busy it is.
5. Blue Bird TaxiÂ
A metered taxi may be the best way to get around in Bali, especially in some of the more crowded areas. You don’t have to wait for a Go-Jek or Grab driver to show up to get one. You can just call one from the street. But you usually have to pay for this, because metered taxis cost more than Go-Jek or Grab.
There are a lot of taxis in Bali, but Blue Bird Taxi is the best. Look out for “blue” taxis that look the same. They may be blue, but not all of them are bluebirds.
Why Use Blue Bird ONLY?
They try to rip off visitors by not turning on the meter. Other “blue” taxi drivers do the same thing sometimes. Instead, they want you to pay a flat rate to your destination at a high price.
Some taxis change or manipulate their meters so that the price of the fare goes up.
In some taxis, the person on the dashboard who is supposed to be the driver isn’t the person who is supposed to be the taxi driver.
Non-Blue Bird taxis are known for scams and shady business. Stick with Blue Bird for a stress-free and fraud-free trip.
6. Private Driver
All of the transportation options we’ve talked about so far are good at getting you from one place to the next.
However, at some point during your time on the island, you’ll likely want to hire a driver for a day tour to take you temple-hopping or shopping for souvenirs around the island. Their job isn’t just to drive you around.
With the price of just over $30, it’s not bad. Hiring a private driver in person, expect to pay $40-60 per day. If you happen to find a friend who can split the cost of hiring a driver, that’s even better!
If you’re going to hire a driver, make sure you have an itinerary for your trip to Bali. There are other ways to get around Bali. You can book package tours that show you some of the best places.
7. Car Rental
Rental cars are another option if you have an international license and want to be your own driver, but you don’t want to drive. However, with how cheap it is to hire a private driver in Bali, I think it might be better to let someone else drive through narrow roads, fight traffic, and use the GPS.
Note about Nusa Islands
If you want to go to the Nusa Islands, the only way to get there right now is to rent a motorbike or a pushbike, which you can also rent.
On the big island of Penida, you can also hire a driver with a car to go with you. On the other hand, there isn’t a car service on Lembongan or Ceningan.
The Bali Bemo is a type of local truck in Nusa island. It has bench seats in the back for passengers to sit on. Some hotels and restaurants offer free pickup service on these trucks Nusa Lembongan. As a bonus, you have a bicycle, a motorbike, and your own two feet to get around!
How to Get Around Bali?
Indonesia’s island of Bali is a popular destination for tourists who want to do everything from go hiking to spend time on the beach with their significant other.
Cyclists, rental cars and taxis are just some of the ways you can get around the island on your own. There are some hotels that offer half-day or full-day tours that include transportation, so you don’t have to think about how to get there on your own. How you get around Bali will depend on where you want to go, the weather, and your budget.

STEP 1
A good way to see parts of Bali if you’re not too far away is to walk. Make sure you have sunscreen and bottled water with you when the weather is hot. Keep your eyes on the ground, though, because some paths in Bali have potholes or cracks. Bicycles can also be used. It might not be the best thing to do in places with a lot of traffic, like Kuta and Legian. Self-driving should be limited to more rural areas.
STEP 2
STEP 2 A bus is a more expensive way to get around, but some of them have air conditioning. “Bemos” are small, green minibusses that are often overcrowded and hot. They are cheap and cost the same price no matter how far you go. All you have to do is wait by the road and wave your hand to get one. Yell “Stop!” and get up out of your seat to get off the bus. They move slowly because Bali roads can be very congested, so have some patience and be flexible with your time.
STEP 3
If you want more space, choose a taxi that charges by the mile. You will be asked over and over again if you need a taxi by the drivers of these taxis. Use the car’s meter and don’t be afraid to ask for lower prices. It can cost as little as $3 to take a 30-minute drive in some places.
STEP 4
If you’re sure of your skills and sense of direction in Bali, rent a car or a motorbike. This is a good place to stay for a long time. When you rent a car, you’ll need to show your home country license and an international license. You’ll also need a special permit from a police station if you want to rent a motorcycle. Make sure you know that when you drive in Bali, you have to watch out for other drivers. Many drivers don’t pay attention to traffic signs like red lights, and they often swerve into your lane to avoid things like other cars. Driving at night is not a good idea. If you’re going around a mountain curve, use your horn to show that you’re coming. People in these areas often drive in the middle of the road.
STEP 5
Get around by air if you want to spend money. People can use Air Bali to get around and have fun with helicopters and seaplanes, as well as boats.
How to Stay Safe in Bali?

Surfing
Many surfers go to Bali because of its famous waves and warm waters. If you want to go surfing in Bali, here are some things to keep in mind:
- Bali is a small island, but its tides can be very strong and change very quickly. There is probably not the best place to learn how to surf if you aren’t already good at it.
- It’s a good idea to go to a professional and licensed surf school in Bali if you want to surf in the tropical waters there. They can make sure you’re learning in a safe way.
- Some beaches are marked with flags or signs that say they’re dangerous, so pay attention and stay away!
- There aren’t many lifeguards on most of the beaches in Bali that you can go to.
- Reef cuts need to be treated by a doctor, so don’t leave them and risk getting them infected, which could be very bad. Check with a doctor right away.
Animals and Insects
There are a lot of amazing animals in Bali, like elephants and monkeys, as well as a lot of different kinds of birds and animals.
As if that wasn’t enough, Bali even has a turtle rehab center. In the area, there are many beautiful bird parks that you can visit, but just like with many wild animals, obey the signs. Keep your wits about you.
Another thing that makes Bali famous is its wild monkeys. They can be found all over the island, but especially at the Ubud monkey forest and the Uluwatu temple. They’re cute, but there are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to monkeys:
- Do not Smile at them. Primates show their teeth when they are angry, which can be seen as a threat.
- Don’t try to fight back when a monkey grabs something you own. The best thing to do would be to buy new sunglasses rather than risk an attack, so don’t do that.
- In that case, keep any valuables in a safe place in your bag, or don’t bring them with you if you want to see monkeys. Their fingers are very sticky.
- Don’t feed them. It’s actually better to keep your hands out of the way.
- It is possible for monkeys to have rabies, and they can also bite people. If you get a nip, get help right away. Don’t put your health at risk by not treating the bite.
The best thing to do is always wear closed-toe shoes when walking in rural areas or at night, just in case you come across some of the less pleasant creatures.
Bali has a lot of snakes, some of which can be dangerous. At night, bites can happen quickly if you step on one, so be sure to carry a flashlight and wear shoes that cover your toes. Like monkey bites, if you get a snake bite, you should get help right away.
Crime
Even though Bali is a beautiful and popular place to go on vacation, there is a lot of petty crime, and corruption and scams do happen. Some simple things can help you stay safe.
Make sure you keep your valuables out of the way and close to you. Zip them up.
Don’t carry a lot of cash at once. Your wallet, purse, and pocket are all good places to put the money, so you won’t lose it all if your bag is stolen or you’re robbed.
Research the area where you’re staying, or ask someone you can trust like the hotel concierge if there are any dangerous places to avoid.
Corruption
Some police officer in Bali is known to be dishonest when they try to extort money from tourists who didn’t know they were being robbed.
Most important, don’t give them any reason to stop you. Even if you’re driving, going out on the town, or visiting a popular tourist spot, be on top of your game at all times. Make sure to follow any local laws or customs, and don’t show off your money or your bad attitude!
Going out at night
Many people now go to Bali to party, and there are a lot of bars all over the island, especially in Kuta, where many people go. It’s important to think about a few things when you’re at night.
- Avoid going out alone at night, especially if you don’t know where you are or how to get there. Don’t let yourself be alone, even on the beach.
- If you don’t need your valuables with you, put them in your hotel safe and lock them.
- If you’re going out at night, know how to get home. People in groups should take turns being alert and sober.
Our advice is to always keep an eye on your drink and never accept food or drink from a stranger unless you can see the barman or waiter making it or giving it to you. - Avoid telling people where you are staying, and be very wary of anyone who asks for your personal information without a good reason.
- When you’re in public places, try not to talk too loudly about your plans or where you’re going. You don’t know who is listening to what you say!
Arak
During your trip, you might see a drink called Arak, which is made from toddy palm trees and can be found all over Bali.
Sadly, there have been a lot of reports of bad Arak being contaminated with methanol and making people sick, or even blind. We don’t think it’s safe to drink this drink, so we don’t think it’s worth it.
Local Laws
There are some laws and customs in Bali that some people from other countries don’t know about, so they might not understand them. Following these simple rules will help you stay out of trouble with the law:
- Look for signs that say you can’t smoke. In many parts of Bali, smoking in public is against the law and can be punished very harshly.
- When you can drink alcohol in Bali, you have to be at least 21 years old.
- Public sex and public nudity, including topless sunbathing, are not acceptable. This includes having sex in public.
- Gambling is illegal and punishes you if you do it. There are a lot of known gambling rings in Bali, and many of them have deals with the police to turn in foreigners. Keep away from any kind of gambling at all, big or small!
- Indonesian law doesn’t say how much alcohol you can drink and drive, but police are known to be very harsh on foreigners who break the law.
- If you’re going to drive, don’t drink any alcohol at all. If you do this, it will not only give the police an excuse to fine you, but it will also void your insurance.
- It is against the law to drive without an International Drivers Permit, which you must keep on you at all times when you’re behind the wheel.

Natural Disasters
Volcanoes and earthquakes have caused some people to be stuck at their destination for longer than they planned, or even not be able to get to their destination at all! Make sure that the start date of your insurance is the day you make any travel reservations.

Animal Bites
A lot of people in Bali get animal bites, mostly from stray dogs or wild monkeys. There have also been snake bites. A great thing about these animals is that you can see them in the wild, but dogs and monkeys are known to have rabies and their bites can spread quickly.
They need to be treated right away if they bite. Many of the snakes in Bali are poisonous, so they need to be treated right away. Remember: Don’t get too close to any wild animals when you’re in another country. Even if they’re cute, don’t touch them.
Theft
Claims: We see a lot of claims for items that have been stolen from people’s bags. When you’re out in public, keep your eyes open and make sure that your valuables are in your bag. If you can, keep your bag in sight at all times. If there are a lot of people around, backpacks should be worn on the front, and satchels should be across your body, not over one shoulder, where they can be easily pulled.
Surfing Injuries
We see a lot of claims from people who have been hurt while surfing or swimming and had to go to the doctor.
If you need to go home early for treatment, there may also be costs for cutting your trip short. Get travel insurance so you don’t have to pay a lot of money to be airlifted to the hospital if you get hurt on the road.

In the whole Indonesian archipelago, Bali is one of the most evocative and popular places for tourists to visit. This place makes you feel good. The smell of incense and clove oil hangs in the thick tropical air.
There are roadside vendors who sell popcorn and petal-strewn food. Traditional gamelan music jangles against the sound of moped engines.
Despite the noise and chaos of the main tourist areas, the island is full of natural beauty and has something for everyone to see and do.
Hikers can climb volcanoes in the jungle to see misty falls, surfers come for the big waves. Cyclists can ride through lush landscapes with rice terrace fields and old villages.

02. Tanah Lot Temple
Tanah Lot is a temple on the island of Bali, and you must visit it on your trip there. People from all over the world come to see this temple because of its beautiful setting, which includes a unique shoreline and sunset views.
This temple is at the top of a cliff with waves crashing on the shore. It is in the Beraban village of the Tabanan regency. Whether you want to see a beautiful sunset or just admire the temple’s amazing architecture, Tanah Lot is the place for you!
It’s also interesting that one can go to the cultural park and see traditional dance shows there. So, because this temple was built as part of Balinese mythology, it is thought that venomous snakes protect this temple from bad spirits who want to hurt people there.

03. Pura Luhur Uluwatu

04. Tegallalang Rice Terraces, Ubud
You may have already heard about the Tegallalang Rice Terraces in Ubud, which are made up of rows of rice. So while you’re in Bali, this is another place you should visit. People fall in love with this place because of the beautiful rice paddies and the great views.
Tegallalang is the setting for three of the most beautiful terraced scenes in Ubud’s shared district. The other two are in the towns of Pejeng and Campuhan. This is a favorite spot for both artists and nature lovers, and there are a lot of craft stands and restaurants near the water’s edge that sell their wares.
The rice terrace is made up of a beautiful field of rice that is emptying, and it is perfectly placed on the sloping bank.
