Interesting Philippine Facts
1. Philippine islands and dreamy bodies of water make up the Philippine archipelago
We already talked about it in the beginning, so we should start there. The Philippines is a group of many islands. Many, to be exact: 7,641 as of 2017. However, they say that because of climate change and rising water levels around the world, that’s not a number that will stay the same.
However, it’s safe to say that the Philippines is made up of more than 7,000 islands that are scattered across beautiful bodies of water. We’ll answer the first question you might have about geography.
The Philippines is somewhere in the world, but where in the world is it? A lot of people live in Southeast Asia. It’s right on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is also known as the world’s Circum-Pacific belt.
There are active volcanoes on every Philippine island, so this means that all of them are on a path “across the Pacific Ocean.”
Another fun fact: The Philippines is known for its beautiful sunrises and sunsets, as well as its tropical weather.
Why? Because it is close to the equator (right above it), the sunlight that hits these areas is more concentrated, leading to the tank-top temperatures and the light shows that happen every day.
2. The country has three main island groups: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao
Speaking of the Philippines’ main island groups, knowing them would help you plan a trip to any of them. Repeat after me: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao are three places in the Philippines that are known for their beauty and history (pronounced min-da-now).
There are only three main groups of islands in the Philippines, so it’s not that hard to remember which one is which.
Visually, think of it as Luzon on top, the Visayas in middle, and Mindanao at the bottom. This is how you can think about it.
Luzon has 38 provinces, the Visayas has 16 provinces, and Mindanao has 27 provinces, so there are a lot of places to live in the country. There are 81 provinces in the Philippines that you can choose from for your next trip and the trips after that.
3. Its capital, Manila, never sleeps

We won’t lie to you: Most people in the Philippines have a love-hate relationship with Manila, the capital city. Because it keeps going, it is both good and bad. We think it’s even one of the cities that never sleep, and the Philippines is known for that.
People who live in Manila can visit central business districts (CBDs), tourist attractions, and even university areas. Many people think it’s too crowded, from the swanky neighborhoods to the slums, because it’s so big.
These days, though, Manila looks a lot better than it used to. In the past, the city was a real beauty. The current local government has been working hard to get it back to that way. One thing is for sure: Manila isn’t a bore.
4. We have ties to Malays, Spanish, Japanese, and Americans
Philippine history will show you that our culture has a lot to do with other cultures. You can already tell that Filipinos and Malaysians have a lot in common because of the way we communicate.
People in Malaysia and Indonesia say “Salamat,” which means “welcome” in English. Masarap and mesarap say the same thing in English.
A lot of Spaniards lived in the Philippines for about 333 years before they left. In fact, the country was named “Philippines” to honor Spain’s King Philipp II, who was in charge at the time.
The Philippines was also taken over by the Japanese and the Americans at different times in history, which is why the Philippines is also known for being very Western (for an Asian country. at least).
We had trade with foreign merchants who came by boat long before the Spanish came to our land. Rajah (tribal king) and datus (noblemen) worked with them.
The Muslims and the Chinese were two of the people in this group. Across the country, you’ll find groups of Filipino Chinese and Muslim Filipino people.
There are a lot of people in the Philippines who come from so many different lines of descent that people say we don’t look like Filipinos. Perhaps this is also a part of the Philippines’ many different types of people.
Language & locals
Learn more about Filipinos and the languages you might run into while you’re in the Philippines. Here’s a little tease: Most people speak English, so you don’t have to worry about not being able to speak the language.
5. Filipino means the language & the people
We bet you already know that Filipinos are people from the Philippines. But did you know that the national language is also called Filipino?
You might have thought it was called Tagalog, but Tagalog is a completely different language that is spoken in many parts of the Philippines. However, it sounds a lot like Filipino, and that is where formal, standardized Filipino came from, so it sounds like it.
People can learn to speak Filipino very quickly because it is very easy to read and write. We’ll start with these: Thanks, masarap (delicious), oo (yes), kaibigan (friend), and tara (let’s go!).
The wordplay doesn’t end there, but it gets even more interesting. “Philippine” is how we talk about things that are from or come from the country.
When it comes to mangoes, did you know that Philippine mangoes are some of the tastiest in the world? Today, you’ll learn a lot of interesting things about the Philippines. This is just one of them.
6. Most Filipinos treat English as a second language
Many people who travel to any part of the Philippines are surprised to find that most people there can speak some English, even if they don’t speak it well. People in many parts of the Philippines speak English as a second language, but not everyone does.
Keep in mind that even street food vendors and tricycle drivers may be able to speak straight English. If you become friends with them, they might even teach you a few words from their country.
7. Expressions you’re likely to hear: Psst, po, uy, mabuhay!
While we’re talking about language, we might as well talk about some expressions and language nuances that the Philippines is known for, as well. pssssst! isn’t even real.
Even though I find it rude and annoying, I understand that most Filipinos use this as a way to get their attention on the street. There is a word for it in the Philippines; it’s called sites. This word is for the sound that people make when they say, “psh.”
“Po” is also used a lot in the Philippines, and you will hear it a lot. As a way to show how much you care about someone, you can add this sign of respect to any statement, even ones made in English (or Taglish, an informal combination of Filipino and English).
Often, you’ll hear people say it out of respect for their elders. Think of it as the Singaporean lah, but it’s used as a show of kindness.
Another word that Filipinos say a lot is “uy,” which means “good.” In simple terms, it means hello. Also, don’t be surprised if Filipinos talk about something by putting their lips together and pointing them in any direction. It’s just what people in the area do.
A lot of people will say, “Mabuhay!” It’s a greeting that says both “Welcome to the Philippines!” and “Long live!” When you greet someone and say that you hope they have a good day, it’s very touching.
8. The country boasts more than 150 languages

Many people who are interested in culture say that even the heritage of the Philippines is very local, and this includes the language. They say there are about 175 languages spoken in the country, with each province having its own main language.
Travelers shouldn’t have a problem with this. Most people in the Philippines speak English as a second or third language, like a second or third language.
In Asia, the Philippines is known for having a lot of places where you can learn English, either online or in person. You could say that we’re good at a lot of languages because we’re used to it.

333 years ago, we said that the Spaniards ruled over the Philippines. A person who spends a long time in one place is bound to have a lot of cultural influences. This might be a little too old-fashioned again, but why not be nice to a Filipino history fan?
It was a strategic location that the Spanish conquistadors wanted to use as a military base or for trade. They also wanted to spread the word of God. It doesn’t surprise me that the Philippines is mostly Catholic then.
And because it is a major center for Catholicism in Asia, it has had a lot of papal visits. The most recent was Pope Francis’ trip to the Philippines in 2015 when six million people came to a mass in Manila’s Rizal Park.

People in the Philippines will also tell you about Piso fare, a cheap airline seat sale that young budget travelers in the Philippines look forward to.
Avoid the Travel Rush
The general rule of traveling is to go off-peak and during the week. School is out in April and May and during Christmas break in the Philippines, which lasts from December 20th to January 3rd.
If you want to save money, you should also stay away from Holy Week, the Chinese New Year, or a festival when you go. Hotel prices go up by 100%, and management wants you to stay at least two nights per booking.
Pick Cheaper Places
Keep your stay short if you are on a budget. Cebu, Boracay, and Palawan are all must-see places. Explore outside of these cities, and visit places you haven’t seen before and smaller towns where it is cheaper to travel.
Check out places that aren’t as well known in the Philippines. They’re also cheaper to travel around.
Use Public Transportation to Get Around

Uber and taxis aren’t worth it. Make sure you don’t have to rent a van as well! Take jeepneys, buses, tricycles (motorcycles with sidecars), and motorcycles called habal-habal to get around.
It’s cheaper to travel between islands by bus with a “roll-on/roll-off” ship than by bus alone. There are buses at major terminals for this. Air-conditioned buses are a good way to stay cool in the Philippines’ humid weather, but if you want to save money, try the regular buses.
Take Overnight Buses
If your trip takes at least 6 hours, you can save money on lodging by taking the last bus that day. Taking a bus from Manila to Ilocos Norte takes at least 9 hours.
Take the last bus that leaves, like one that leaves at 7 pm. Then, you can sleep on the bus. When you wake up, you will already be on your way. Take a shower when you check in.
Stay at a Pension House.

There are hostels in Europe and other Asian countries where you can stay for cheap. You don’t see them in the Philippines, or they aren’t marked that way. PHILIPPINES: Pension homes are like a bed and breakfast. Cheap: They cost $5–$10 per night. Some cheap hotels also have dorm-style rooms that cost even less.
Eat Like a Local
You don’t have to eat street food all the time. Even Justin Trudeau likes Jollibee, which is a cheap fast-food chain in the Philippines. In a mall, look for food courts or food halls where you can get cheap food.
Take a look online to find the best places to eat in a city. You’ll find local favorites that are also cheap. When you visit small towns, look for restaurants called karenderias.
Buy Food from a Supermarket and a Quick-Service Store.
Eat and drink at home instead of going out to eat or to a cafe for a cup of coffee. Don’t be afraid of stocking up on food essentials.
Another thing to do is buy San Miguel Light at the grocery store, where alcohol costs less. It’s been a lot of fun to see 7-Eleven stores popping up all over the country. The cheap sandwiches and rice meals can be bought from these stores, as well as other things.
Carry less money.
There aren’t many places in the Philippines where you can use a credit card. The country is mostly cash-only. If you want to go on a cheap trip, you need to bring money.
Local currencies can be hard to work with, but you can try having small amounts of Philippine pesos. To help you get a better deal, use this method.
Look for Travel Buddies

The cost of transportation and lodging can eat into your travel budget, especially if you rent a motorboat or a tricycle for part of your trip.
You can save money if you travel with a group for a short time instead of alone. By working with other tourists you meet along the way, you can cut down on your costs. You can split the cost of a fare or a hotel room with them.
Enjoy Free Attractions and Rides
The Philippines has a lot of free things to do, which adds to its reputation as a cheap place to visit. There are a lot of parks and boulevards in the country where you can hang out and meet people, as well as places where you can take pictures.
Museums and other government-owned attractions, like national parks, also don’t charge much to get in. Even in Manila, the capital city, there are free things to do and see that come with free shuttles.
Befriend the Locals
Filipinos are known for being friendly and willing to help people who aren’t their friends or family. Don’t be afraid to ask for directions or travel suggestions right away.
As long as they like and trust you, they might let you stay in their homes, especially during the Christmas season and at other events.
To save money while visiting the Philippines during holidays, you might want to make friends with locals and help them out when they need help. Some locals will be happy to show you around their city, which will save you money on a tour guide.
